Sailing in light winds rarely looks really exciting. It is a bit like chess, particularly when the sailing coverage is cut off, starts late, or there is little or no interaction with the athletes. We have to face the fact that Beijing or Quingdao will be similar. Whoopee. But please not the laser radial for the women's single hander! |

A positive attitude may not solve all your problems, but it will annoy enough people to make it worth the effort.

Second no to the Radial - on the principal that the rig isn't designed for
the hull... eg the hull should be scaled down too. The Laser's a great boat, using something with a smaller rig that it was really designed to carry is criminal for the games in my book. Sorry but thingk the Europe is still the best option - and no i don't sail one! |

Okay - there are plenty of advantages to having different rig options for a
hull where there are plenty around, and nationals entries for all three rigs are great, but when you have something which has a scaled down hull to match it is much nicer to sail - and if you're sailign at the top end surely you deserve something that is really enjoyable to sail too. |

Why is there always this pre-occupation with making sailing spectator friendly or easier for non-sailors to understand? I don't get it. The average member of the public couldn't care less about sailing, yet many within the sport advocate its dumbing-down to pander to their perceived needs. Surely it's more important to look after the interests of the people who actually care about the sport and concentrate on keeping sailing competitor-friendly instead. I once heard the organisers of national championship expressing a wish to hold racing closer to the shore to cater for spectators! What? THERE WEREN'T ANY!! There wouldn't be any even if the racing was held in Tesco's car park, never mind on the sea, because sailing is fundamentally boring to watch, full stop. The organisers were willing to compromise the quality of the racing for the 150+ paying competitors to cater for some spectators who only existed in their imagination. Crazy! |

The only specator friendly sailing I have done this year was team/match racing on a pool at the London Boat show... Hardly something you could really do for the Olympics (see Dutch Proposal). However for people who understand sailing it was probably quite good to watch but was very difficult with shifty winds (I managed to get a grade two tear of a ligament in my knee which put me out of sailing for several weeks!) When the event is being shown on TV there is big bucks involved and hence the sailors tend to get messed about...

The decision of which equipment [for the Olympics] the Women's committee
support took an extensive period of discussion within the Women's Sailing Committee, and by the end of an in-depth debate, the Committee put forward a proposal to support the Laser Radial. The final submission for the equipment to be used in Beijing will be made by a vote of the Events Committee tomorrow morning before it is debated in Council on Friday. |
