Going to look at a used Phantom this morning, it's a lake boat so shouldn't
be too badly stressed. Anything particular to look out for? Not for me, it's for a pal, big guy wants to punish my scrawny ass in club racing.. |

presumably he's buying a modern self drainer? I don't think I'd buy one that wasn't. otherwise all the usual stress points I would think.

it's budget dependent but ideally you'd want a vandercraft boat (post c1100 sail no) with a carbon mast/boom and a plastic sail. Some of the manufacturers (e.g P&B) have different cuts depending on whether you are lager, very lager or stella supersized.
There are one or two composite boats (plastic hulls with wooden decks) around in the post 1100 sail number range but IMHO not much point in buying one as the wood needs tlc, and it's likely to be a bit heavier than a placcy one. From 1274 onwards the hulls were made by ovis and they have a number of slight changes to the internal layout, but not enough to make a massive difference, and the earlier boats can be equally competitive. If it's setup properly then the forestay should be on a cascade system led back in the boat, as that is the 2nd most used control after the kicker (let more off when it gets windy) Nothint special really to look out for - check the hull deck join around the edges, and the cockpit/floor join, trailing edge of the hull around the edges. Good boats, nice 'n' light and powerup well even with a 'roy hattersley' doing the driving |

There is actually plenty to look out for on a phantom as all though its not common knowledge there have been plenty of issues with these boats.
If its an older wooden boat they are built light and as such the plywood can be thin and is prone to damage. If its a GRP one, they are normally all over weight. They have anumber of issues they are floppy and heavy and well off the pace of the newer epoxy boats. I have seen GRP boats with people knees through cockpit floors (on two different boats) Fordecks pulling away under forstay tension (i wouldn't buy a GRP phantom as they are over priced and uncompetiive) Epoxy boats are a different matter, but i know of 4 different boats (some brand new) which have had centre board cases put in crooked. Fittings pulling out from the deck. Side decks where you hike from delaminating and going floppy as well as cockpit floors. Although the earlier Epoxy boats were pretty well built (circa 1100 number) You should be checking for these things with every dinghy you buy. I must stress these are only examples of people i know and a smaller cross section but most of these boats have had problems. I used to own a phantom and my brother has been in and out of the class for years.
Good Luck |

Ooerr, y'all didn't come back quick enough, we've got it now. Its 900 and
something 71 maybe. It looks O.K. its from a club nr Tonbridge that don't sail in the winter (because they flood the place)and it's been kept under cover. For the money it'll even things up between myself and my windsurfing buddy I should think we'll be having some proper duels until that is I fully Franken up the Blaze. He has been lobotomised by years of Supernova abuse so this will be an improvement, I've been telling him to get a Phantom ever since I first laid eyes on one the year I first saw the Alto, but he's such a tightwad (these retired millionaires generally are) he wont ante up the dosh for an epoxy one. Then Demolition Dan showed up in a wooden one and caused great levity as the woodworm abandoned ship just prior to his due launch and sinking thereof but the general outline renewed his interest and here we are.. So it's game on now, FrankenBlaze v Casper the Phantom Menace and we're opening book on the first race this Sunday... Edited by G.R.F. |

Yes but unfortunately not in front of us, word is she went down off the coast of Bexhill sadly without the loss of all hands.. This is the 3rd or 4th craft to fail at the hands of Dan (Demolition) Dumberer who is vying with the Luckless Lucy the Lash for the highest no of boats broken this year.. (Lucy Lash has teemed up with the Dumb part of D&D to destroy as many washbag containers that B14 world has to offer and word has it the Europeans is on their agenda - watch out.. |

His boat s called Casper, the other bit is just a grumpfism..
Everyone gets a knickname in grumpfworld wing wang.. If they're interesting enough of course. ![]() And anyway surely all Phantoms are a Menace so why would you adopt a generic term.. ![]() |

970 odd sounds like one of the later Rondar built boats. A guy at Hunts had 930 for a few years, it looked good but was undoubtedly overweight (didn't seem to slow him down though). Now they all have the Epoxy boats with carbon sticks so it has developed in to an arms race... The Vandercraft built exposy boats do have deck issues becaus the strengthening is in the wrong place. Ovi have sorted this out though. |
