Burton week is approaching, the National 12 Nationals. last year, there were 39 boats attending, 36 the year before, 45 for the 2 years before that.

This year, with a few weeks to go, there are 70 entries. these are fully paid up cheque books out, committed entries. The event is 23-26 May at Thorpe Bay.

rumour has it that there might be a few available boats to borrow to crews that maybe have sailed them in the past and are interested in coming along again.  their might be a few people on here not registered with the class association the have not realised the resurgence going on.

a total of 23 boats are either vintage or AC, so there is interest there for people who own older boats (dogmatic perhaps)

I will be there in an old AC, propping up both the fleet and the bar, why not come and join us. Web sites are: http://www.national12.org/index.shtml and http://www.burtonweek.org/

Have the N12's given up on a week long Burton Week, then? If that explains the rise in numbers, then perhaps a good move.

Yep: they have finally given up on the 1 race a day week long format, good for them as it is clearly more popular but coupled with that I am sure they have made a huge effort to get entries.

A revival for the class would need to see bigger open meeting attendance, club racing fleets and health boat building numbers ...

The Merlin Rockets have always had a full week-long champs, with 1 race a day (although recently we have experimented with a few 2-race days).

Entries have been between 62 and 82 boats in the last 5 years, so no major problem.

the members get what the members want ... Merlins are clearly happy with the format but I suspect they are the last class to stick with it ...

12's have clearly benefitted from the change of format.

The key to change is to change when you are ahead of the game; not wait until you are in trouble ...

Getting 70 entries is great for the N12s. I hope they get the wind they deserve.

Does the class still have a healthy tradition of cool paint jobs? Or are all the new boats plain black carbon these days?!!
