Burton week is approaching, the National 12 Nationals. last year, there were 39 boats attending, 36 the year before, 45 for the 2 years before that.

This year, with a few weeks to go, there are 70 entries. these are fully paid up cheque books out, committed entries. The event is 23-26 May at Thorpe Bay.

rumour has it that there might be a few available boats to borrow to crews that maybe have sailed them in the past and are interested in coming along again.  their might be a few people on here not registered with the class association the have not realised the resurgence going on.

a total of 23 boats are either vintage or AC, so there is interest there for people who own older boats (dogmatic perhaps)

I will be there in an old AC, propping up both the fleet and the bar, why not come and join us. Web sites are: http://www.national12.org/index.shtml - http://www.national12.org/index.shtml  and http://www.burtonweek.org/ - http://www.burtonweek.org/

Have the N12's given up on a week long Burton Week, then? If that explains the rise in numbers, then perhaps a good move.

Yep: they have finally given up on the 1 race a day week long format, good for them as it is clearly more popular but coupled with that I am sure they have made a huge effort to get entries.

A revival for the class would need to see bigger open meeting attendance, club racing fleets and health boat building numbers ...

The Merlin Rockets have always had a full week-long champs, with 1 race a day (although recently we have experimented with a few 2-race days).

Entries have been between 62 and 82 boats in the last 5 years, so no major problem.

the members get what the members want ... Merlins are clearly happy with the format but I suspect they are the last class to stick with it ...

12's have clearly benefitted from the change of format.

The key to change is to change when you are ahead of the game; not wait until you are in trouble ...

Getting 70 entries is great for the N12s. I hope they get the wind they deserve.

Does the class still have a healthy tradition of cool paint jobs? Or are all the new boats plain black carbon these days?!!

saw two at Thorpe Bay over the weekend- one was in solid purple, the other in show-off clear-coat

OK, mostly one race a day. two races, two days of the week.

You can hardly pick on Rick for that...

Im afraid my money is gonna have to be on Mr Richards for this one. From what ive seen of his new twelve it is seriously fast and hes not exactly a cruddy sailor.

Ive never really had an intrest in the 12s until now. is there anyone else who we should look out for? anyone that can spoil his moment?

The 14's still go with the one race a day format and seem to be going fairly strong as well ...

they won last year right?

how many other twelves are running with t-foil rudders now? how about trim tabs on the centreboard? that seems to provide a massive increase in speed

It will be very interesting to see how Jo goes ...

Even if he wins we will still not know if the boat is any good ...

why not? compared to his old 12 its in a different league. upwind it is alot faster than a 400 his other 12 could not get close to that speed

surely if he wins it proves his boat is good enough?

If he wins it will prove it is good enough for a sailor of Jo's talent to win with.

Jo is a very good sailor and could win with a slow boat ... but I have no doubt the boat is good too ....

No ... but that was a vintage boat and he wasn't far off the pace.

My comments were a compliment to Jo ... with his new creation I am sure he will be a force to be reconed with ...

He had three firsts and a second going into the Burton, so I suspect he'll have taken the Silver National too. Final day today, with 2 races scheduled.

Fantastic; well Jo's return to the class in his own self designed & built boat has been pretty impressive ... he just needs to now lend his boat to a mortal to see if they can make it go equally fast ...

Grumps just Google Jo Richards and you'll find a pretty long list of his achievements as both a helm and a designer ... no doubt he couldn't hold a candle to your reputation in the windsurfing arena but then again even Robbie Nash couldn't do that ....

1984 Olympic bronze medallist in a Flying Dutchman, Jo Richards designed the Laser's Pico, Vortex, Vago, Bahia and Bug + various National 12s and Merlin Rockets - there's a nice article from 2001 about Jo Richards http://www.ybw.com/sp/features/jorichards/index.html - here

Jo & Sophie won both races today so win the week with straight bullets ... a very impressive performance.

Apparently only 23 finishers in the last race; very breezy ....

They didn't win the first race! Graham and Zoe did, was still a white wash
though, the only other trophies he didn't pick up were the under 21 and
ladies prize. The boat certainly was quick, although there are so many
gizmos on the boat it is not entirely clear if one has made big difference.
There were people occasionally going quicker, but no one could match the
consistent round the course speed, i was very pleased he had to overtake me
twice, including the Burton, if only I knew how to sail down wind without a
assymetric!

I read they won counting only firsts ... discarding a 2nd.

To be hoped it will encourage some new builds and kick start the the secondhand market within the fleet.

Nothing compared to the bigger boats he has designed. always remember one cowes week when they rounded the top mark by the needles, hoisted the kite in 18 knots of wind and overtook ABM amro on the way downhill.........that was in a 36 footer with less than half the rag up.

He is, as has been said, a very very good sailor and he is a very good designer as well. alot of his designs are quite "whacky" but they do seem to work. take the vortex, although not a gret success the tunnel hull circulates spray backwards through it, generating lift, god knows what he dreams at night to think of ideas like that. and the twelve is on a different level, design wise, to most other dinghys. I dont know how well it went at thorpe bay, but when he has been tuning in cowes he has destroyed two 400's upwind and thats in both speed and height. ive never seen another 12 get close to that.

I think its a very well deserved win. A fantastically fast boat, helped along by a fantastically fast sailor.
