The top 10 contenders for the BBC Sports Personality of the Year award have been named.

The list features Olympic heroes, swimmer Rebecca Adlington, and cycling champions Nicole Cooke, Chris Hoy, Rebecca Romero and Bradley Wiggins.

Fellow Beijing winners, sailor Ben Ainslie and 400m gold medallist Christine Ohuruogu also make the list.

F1 champion Lewis Hamilton, boxer Joe Calzaghe and British tennis number one Andy Murray make up the 10.

These sporting celebrities will now compete for the public vote on the night of the live show which will be broadcast live at 1900 GMT, Sunday 14 December on BBC One.

The public will be able to vote for their BBC Sports Personality of the Year by telephone and details of the numbers to vote on will be given out during the programme which will be presented by Sue Barker, Gary Lineker and Jake Humphrey.

Now to get every sailor to vote for Ben!

Agreed Hoy should win but I think Hamilton will win.

Calzaghe won last year so I can't see him doing the double.

Nice to see Ben on the list but I don't think sailing got enough TV coverage for him to have a chance.

what are the nominations for that category.

i think it would be a very big surprise if any sailors got any of the major awards due to the lack of coverage and appreciation the sport gets.

Is anyone seriously beliveing anyone other than Adlington or Hamilton stands a chance?

Yes, there's more deserving winners. But the public vote for this...

why not set up a poll on here, so we can see who we would vote to win?

IMHO it would take a serious campaign to shift the public vote away from Lewis Hamilton. I accept he did well to win but it was hardly convincing towards the end. (before anyone shouts I know I couldn't achieve anywhere near his standards and yes I realise how hard it is!)

Chris Hoy was outstanding as was Rebecca Addlington.

Andy Murray always makes me want to give him an iron and a razor.

Would be nice to see Ben Ainslie in the top 3 wouldn't it.

im surprised by the responses so far, in any other sport (cycling, swimming, F1, tennis) you can bet that their supporters will only be betting on their person - and have probably set up support forums to encourage people to call in on the night. Who would not want to see their sport star winning the award.

As a sailor i will definately be supporting Ben. Yes Chris Hoy won several golds at the olympics, but we all know that in sailing thats impossible - 1 gold per olympics.

I urge everyone to support Ben and Sailing. If Ben was to win/top 3- the knock-on effects in sponsors / tv coverage would benefit the whole of UK sailing.
