At the beginning of the summer I had a look at 600 prices and many were around £1200-ish mark. Now I've finally got the cash together at the end of the season and the prices have gone nuts, they are all at £1800+. What has happened?

What with the mad £200/yr insurance, they are now well out of my price range

check Y&Y classifieds, there is quite a cheap one on there i think. I havew also seen one or two for around 1400,  also check the rs 600 owners club, there is a cheapish on on there i think. I am trying to get one now before they go up to much more, if they go up enough i might be able to sell and get a mps , one can always hope!

The 600 seems to be going though a major resurgence at
the moment with loads of new faces in the fleet which is
causing a bit of a hike in the second hand prices. Still
the best bang for buck boat around in my opinion...
Oh and you can insure it for a lot less (around £80) if
you shop around

femto is right, at the moment the 600 is still extreme value for money at its current price, and even if it continues rising it will be good value for a considerable amount longer.

Noble Marine can insure a £1500 RS600 for just over £200 per year.  If an insurer is undercutting us by this margin, you should carefully check the cover being offered and the reputation of the insurance company providing the policy.  If in any doubt, ask your fellow sailors or the repairers for their advice before buying a policy or take a look at our Guide to Insuring your Dinghy.

Remember that a cheap policy may end up costing you a lot more if you should have to make a claim.

I think its great that it costs £200 to insure a £1500 boat!, I can insure my misses £7000 Renault Clio that she uses every day for the same money!  Do some shopping around! I know the £600 is a perfomance racing machine! but come on.

Having said that when i put a claim through on my phantom Nobel were very quick to payout, so i suppose you get some value there.

The comparison between insurance cost of cars and boats is one that is frequently made, but the two are obviously very different.

Replacing the mast and rigging on an RS600 costs £1100.  If we are to offer a New-For-Old policy for the rigs of this class, then we need to charge an appropriate premium.  Other insurers that do not offer this cover, can charge less, but could leave their clients with a big gap to fund between the market value of a four year old mast and the cost replacing with a new one.

By all means shop around, but check the cover being offered and don't just accept the cheapest premium.

Is there dinghy insurance cover around that is just 3rd party + theft?

Insuring older 14's is hell. Mine was £800, insurance quote was £300 which is nuts, unfortunatly it is (usually) the same premium if your 14 is £15,000 or £600  I'm sure many older high performance boats are not insured for this reason.

I've also had a combi trailer stolen from inside a locked and alarmed boatpark and the insurance company were refusing to pay out until they were threatened with the press/legal action. My policy on insurance for anything is the bare minimum.

I am also in the process of getting a 600. I have showed interest in a few boats but if your not quick to get down and have a look, they go. The one fergus was talking about in the Y&Y classifieds i think has gone as i rung the bloke on sunday and said a guy was coming to see it on monday, and at just over a grand it was probabley snapped up.
