Laser 1

For a few years now we've been struggling to find a succinct way of naming in conversation the original Laser as opposed to the later designs. A common resort was to talk about the 'Laser 1', usually accompanied by an apology that 'I know it's not really called that'

Well, good news: it is called that! I've just seen the latest Laser Centre advert and they're selling their used ones as Laser 1's!

Sorry if that's old hat to some of you, but it was news to me.

Way back in the midst of time, back before you were even a glimmer in your daddys eye, a nice man called Mr. Bruce asked another nice man Called Mr. Kirby to design a boat.  To begin with they called it 'The Weekender' then later it was changed to 'Laser'.  And for a long time thats all there was.  Then one day some clever marketing people realised that there was more money to be made in them there hills and introduced some new models.  Now the thing is the company that made the laser...well that was called laser too.  Something to do with market branding, ask nice Mr. Rick he's good at that sort of thing! Any way this meant their new boats had names like Laser 2000 and Laser 4000.  Now this confused all the nice sailors becasue now if you said 'I'm taking out a laser this afetrnoon' people didn't know what boat you were going sail.  So being a resourceful bunch they started calling the 'origina'l Laser the Laser 1.  And now becuse this coloquialisim is so wide spread the clever laser marketing folk have now adopted it offically.  Now close your eyes and go to sleep, you've got a busy day of posting tommorrow.
