Topic: Laser 1
Posted By: Medway Maniac
Subject: Laser 1

For a few years now we've been struggling to find a succinct way of naming in conversation the original Laser as opposed to the later designs. A common resort was to talk about the 'Laser 1', usually accompanied by an apology that 'I know it's not really called that'

Well, good news: it is called that! I've just seen the latest Laser Centre advert and they're selling their used ones as Laser 1's!

Sorry if that's old hat to some of you, but it was news to me.

Way back in the midst of time, back before you were even a glimmer in your daddys eye, a nice man called Mr. Bruce asked another nice man Called Mr. Kirby to design a boat.  To begin with they called it 'The Weekender' then later it was changed to 'Laser'.  And for a long time thats all there was.  Then one day some clever marketing people realised that there was more money to be made in them there hills and introduced some new models.  Now the thing is the company that made the laser...well that was called laser too.  Something to do with market branding, ask nice Mr. Rick he's good at that sort of thing! Any way this meant their new boats had names like Laser 2000 and Laser 4000.  Now this confused all the nice sailors becasue now if you said 'I'm taking out a laser this afetrnoon' people didn't know what boat you were going sail.  So being a resourceful bunch they started calling the 'origina'l Laser the Laser 1.  And now becuse this coloquialisim is so wide spread the clever laser marketing folk have now adopted it offically.  Now close your eyes and go to sleep, you've got a busy day of posting tommorrow.

Can you please leave the poor kid alone?

Yes, he's posted almost 600 messages in 7 weeks. Yes, he puts his foot in it more often than some. Yes, he types before engaging brain... But this constant rebuffing is getting a little tiresome.
For all we know, he's a 13-year-old, boiling hot in his Dubai 2-bedroom flat, the air-con's on the blink, school's out, Mum and Dad are at work, big bro's with his girlfriend (nice boobs, by the way, he but got a slap on New Year's Eve when he tried a bit of friendly groping). Sailing's tempting, but he still can't pull the Feva up the slipway without help (it's 45șC, he keeps telling us, just imagine the effort!).

All's left for him is the umpteenth repeat of the 2002 Christmas episode of EastEnders (when Jamie gets run over - hospital, everlasting promises, tears, despair, Merry Christmas). On the other English-speaking channel, you can get "The Best of Jerry Springer - uncensored!". Worth a giggle or two, but it's only on after 2am and there's a new episode of Postman Pat first thing in the morning and he certainly wouldn't miss that for the world!

So he tries to get a few virtual friends and joins the Y&Y forum... What kind of welcome are we giving him? Irony and derision. I don't think he really deserves such a harsh treatment.

Most of you have missed the meteoric appearance of the latest village idiot, who turned up Sunday night and got zapped to oblivion on Monday morning. You should have been there: feva_kid blends in easily when compared to the overwhelming stupidity of that little darling!

Is water skiing an option? Even I might give it a go in those conditions!

true, but then h's kind of proving your point...Hey Feva_Kid, in answer to your question:<br style="font-style: italic;"><span style="font-style: italic;">'would any of you like to be ikn my position right now?'</span>Well I have to be honest my answer is 'no'.  The thought of returning to those days of end-of-year exams, fluffy top-lip facial hair &  uncontrollable arousal in the most uninspiring of scenarios would fill me with dread.  But then there are lots of other things for you to look forward to as well before you hit the grand old age of 21 and from what I can see you have it made mate: 1) Your living in a foreign country which is hot all year round- sail in shorts and t-shirt every day; go the beach and learn to kitesurf / windsurf whilst checking out the bikini-clad trophy wives of the uber-rich and generally not have the day-to-day monotony of a teenger confined to say, a small market town in Lincolnshire.   2) You're obviously going to be fairly well travelled and I would imagine the educational standards for ex-pats in Dubai is of a very high standard- both will ensure your UCAS application will probably be quite well recieved in a few years<!-- Signature -->3) You have a laser- now okay I'm not their greatest fan, but in 2 knots of wind and with a 14 year old flyweight on the stick you should be relatively competitive.  Now unfortunately you have forgotten the sail number for said Laser, which is a bit of bind when it comes to say signing on or off.  Therefore, as long as no one else objects; I reckon the sailing community would be more than happy for you to adopt a new sail number; something that's easy to remember- I would propose a reassignment of Laser sail number "1".  In fact feva_kid, why not reinvent yourself on the forum with a new name: Laser_1 would be ideal; give yourself a week or two off posting for your alter-ego to fade away and come back as Laser_1 a new member with thoughtful, well researched prose into the comings and goings of the sailing world.  It would be a great metamorphosis- like a fly, buzzing with energy emerging from the rotting pupa of a little maggot.

ok i wont make a new user but will try to make my spelling better and not post stupid posts.please pm me if you spot a stupid post from now on and i will remove it.

Just to raise this point seems Laser don't use the product name Laser 1 as far as I can see ... it's still the good 'ol Laser.

See. http://www.lasersailing.com/ - http://www.lasersailing.com/  and have a look at the range ...

This is also backed up in recent print ad's I have seen. Although it does get called the Olympic Laser in places ...

So ... there is not a Laser 1 in the range ... it's a Laser

That is a classified and I guess they have done that for clarity.

Have a look at p22 of the latest Y&Yand the Laser website ... I think it is clear that the product name is Laser, but they have created confusion with the classified.

Product naming is a tricky business when a whole range evolves from a hot product ...

In this case I believe the product name is Laser and not Laser 1.

regards,

Rick

Indeed, but by doing it 'for clarity' they're admitting it's unclear without the '1'...

and of course, there is an element of brand dillution for the original boat when you factor in the Laser 4.7 and Radial which also have had or have their own campaigns- are they Laser '1's or is it just another example of the 'versatility' buzzword that haunts dinghy advertising?

So long as it doesnt become the laser skiff, im happy...

All those phrases have a use if used correctly and in the right context - they only turn to bullsh*t when used by people who don't know what they are talking about ...

I have also heard someone achieve a full house in less than 5 minutes ... and actually say nothing ...
