The jump for a helm is pretty managable really, it is the crew who has the hard job. they have to be able to keep the boat totally flat which can be pretty tricky sometimes. The kite is fairly unforgiving and the boat is noticably unstable. When i 1st moved into the boat with my brother we had an advantage that he was an rs800 crew for a year so he was fairly experianced with skiffs. It is a challenge but it is an attainable one. You may swim to start off with but with practice the 'boat handling hump' can be overcome fairly quickly. Throw yourself in and get going, the learning curve may be steep, but it is fun!

PM me if you want any tips. Plus i am selling my boat after the nats and worlds in july so if you would like a well sorted, well priced, competitive specimen of the 29er class, get in touch

Both boats are suited to different aspects of sailing. I would suggest that the 29er is the boat for someone who will be participating in youth events and hoping to compete on a larger scale. I am not sure what the 500 is suited to (especially with the two rigs) but i am sure it will find it's own way.

Maybe the person who started the thread could tell us his opinions

thx for advice i still havent chosen yet but it looks like its gonno a 29er or a laser 3000. It seems laser 3000 would be a good stepping stone boat but we would only sail it for a few months before a 29er would be calling. How hard is the jump from topper to 29er?

More than one Laser salesman has claimed to me that the Vago is as fast downwind as a 4000. If you divide what salesmen say by two, you're about right: we could give our club's 2000's a good old run for their money downwind when we tried a Vago demonstrator in a F3-4! A 3000 would have been long gone.

As for round the course, PY 980? - maybe with Ben Ainsley... I guess even the 500 would be pushing it at that PY, 'cept maybe in light airs against trapeze-boat opposition.

But the flexy hull should give a nice spring-suspension ride...

Are we talking straight line speed? or round the course speed? i'm thinking a downwind spinny leg would give the best judgement of the overall top speed of each boat.

Next bet, is the Vago faster than the 4000, any takers?

I'll put £500 on the 4000

Any boat can give a higher sensation of speed, its simple just make a boat that kicks up tons of spray and make it a bit tippy, Ka-Plow all of a sudden youve got yourself a feel fast winning formula!
The vago also a feel fast, go slooooooww winning formula!
Good for learning in although dont expect RS500 to be invited to the holt tide ride just yet.
