Sounds like a good day, RNLI wouldn't get involved if their was no benefit to themselves, with small boats on the water, various ages and abilities, odds are that if they got a shout it would be for your party anyway.

I guess it's a small community up here on Anglesey. Doubt the same concept would work on the Solent but horses for courses hey what  Thumbs Up

TBH we have enough RHIBs around to provide cover (and several drivers with some kind of appropriate training, including a couple of RYA SIs), if theres much breeze there will be one on the water in addition to the Inshore but the RNLI guys seem to like coming over and keeping an eye on us (and to socialise) so who are we to argue.

Well you are very lucky to blag free safety cover from the RNLI.

We've had their support for a few big events, but they've always been very clear that they are not part of the event organisation and may have to leave at zero notice.

Yup, if they get a shout we abandon and come ashore, we don't take money from the public we collect donations to the RNLI.

Some are under 18, invariable sailing under the supervision of their parents (though often in their own boat).

If you go for a blast off the beach, or a cruise, or say to a couple of mates, race you around the channel marker and back.........?

If the RNLI H&S guy had any concerns he would certainly voice them.

Personally it sounds like a bloody good idea to me. Great stuff. Carry on  Wink

Personally I would be concerned that you are taking money from the public (since the punters are not members of a club?) therefore all sorts of H&S should apply.
Some of these punters are under 18?
What happens if the RNLI get a shout the other side of the bay? Do you all go ashore before they zoom off?

With the best will in the world, accidents can and do happen.
Then what?

No insurance?

Required for the sailors/boats who run the racing as a collective. There is no 'club' entity as such.

No formal provision of safety cover?

Apart from the RNLI?

Clearly it depends what you sail, where you sail and how you sail it, but if you are, for example, sailing a high performance boat on the open sea - is it really reasonable to expect the RNLI to be your primary safety cover? Even the best crews can have gear failure, get caught out by changing conditions etc.

I do know someone who was an RNLI crew member who capsized when out alone in a very public place at sea and found himself being rescued by his other crew members - he says there was no real problem, but it took some living down!

start up a new club just around the corner

Waterside land was a little cheaper back then...

Sailing clubs don't need premises or land, they need water. My holiday club has no clubhouse or formal membership just an email list and we turn up on the beach at the appointed time, pay out £5 and race. Outgoings = £0 so every penny goes to our chosen charity, the local RNLI crew. Okay it helps that most of our 'members' spend their weekends on one of two caravan sites adjacent to the beach from which we launch but we get good sailing. The racing is more fun racing than good club standard, but that encourages those who don't normally race to take part and we had, typically, 25 boats out on each regatta day. And, the local lifeboat turns out to give us safety cover (they use it as a training day).

That paradigm wouldn't suit everybody but it has been going since 1961 and works well. We have other fundraisers too and presented Holyhead Lifeboat crew a cheque for £1350 at the end of last season.
