Well i saw at Bala in May an I14 desperately trying to shrug off Atum on a long run back to the club and Atum wasn't being lost, so is it really a faster 14ft boat? Lol, the 14 does look good but just doesn't have the same silly factor as a Cherub / 12. |

The 14s look so much faster though, don't know why but they just do!

A list which varies for everyone of course. The 14 wouldn't be on mine. Great classes... for me 505, IC, Int Moth, 12footer, its not actually a long list... The 29er might make the list in a while, the XX won't for sure. |

The modern 14's are much quicker upwind and have an incredable standard at the top end.
But for low cost development class racing I think the Cherub has the edge at the moment. Most of the active boats in the class are like the Kipper and at the nationals you will have plenty of like boats to race against. How many Penultimates will be at POW? With a Cherub you are sailng a 50kg boat compared with about 85kg for a Penultimate and that makes a big difference. |

If it doesn't break it's too heavy; if it does it wasn't built right

I think that could be an example of a well sailed cherub vs a not so well sailed 14. TBH the new i14's, on paper, should leave the cherubs standing but if a boats not sailed well it's not going to be fast be it an 18 or an oppie. I remember when i first started sailing the 200, I raced a n12 (3111) which as it happens is the first registered baggy trousers, and it left us standing. Now we've got used to the boat, improved our sailing dramaticly and now were faster than that n12. Edited by Smight at BBSC |

Forgive my little brother ha ha. If he payed attention he wud no tht russ hasnt had it that long. If the cherubites really wanted to put their money where their mouths were theyd come down to itchenor and race the 14s there. I can promise u even the mighty atom bomb would be swept aside as most of the 14 sailors are seriously good with very quick boats. Judging by the way my 14 even in the light stuff was getting past the 800s im pretty sure we could hold off the cherub contingent
![]() And there should be quite a few pennies at POW with current rules boats like mine there. And jim if you'd have the 29er on a boats list over a 14 you need to think again! ![]() |

The i14 was pretty poor for a whole chunk of its history, from the 60s right through until the amalgamation. Thinking in the long term I can't ignore that. They're fine boats now, but it took throwing out the entire fleet and starting again with what was to all intents and purposes a new class. The 29er is IMHO the best one design of about the last 25 years, and I think it could well turn out to be one of the great boats. The XX on the other hand I am a lot less convinced about. |

tbh the cherub and the i14 are very different classes that appeal to different people. I'm sure that that the majority of the cherub fleet will accept that the most of the time a cherub would not keep up with a 14 but you couldn't put 22 stone in a i14 and get the same performance over the wind range as you would from a cherub, for example. Yes there will be some i14's that may cope with lightweights in them but you'll also find some heavyier sailors in cherubs. They are as i said very different class that have some very different boats.
