fit your straps verticly James, if they are at an angle you are more inclined to fall out also, it is more uncomfortable with your foot at a 90 angle !!!, having said that a slight angle may help a little.  but if ur in the back foot loops on the MPS, last thing you are gonna be thinking about are "ouch my feet hurt a little bit or damn i wish i had put my foot loops on at an angle "

I checked a pair out on a musto at the weekend and they looked quite clever. I guess you've got more chance of clipping a pair back together after a big wipeout than you have putting your ankle back together if you break it! It's just a safety measure after all, I am guessing that you would still initially try and get your foot out when it all goes wrong rather than just relying on some fancy technology!

It says on the website you can choose the release strength by how far you
put the strap into the gripper, but more importantly, how fast can you put
them back together if at all? As you havent got time after a wipeout to be
clipping all your footloops back together mid race!

Fair point

So on the releasable ones how do they not release when you are just sailing

I heard that you want them tighter if anything so that only your toes can fit, i.e. cant go past the wide part of you foot. That way, when you do go in, your foot is not too far in the strap, and should come out very easily.

And if it doesn't you might only break a toe rather than an ankle

I'm not saying fit them horizontal, but a few degrees off vertical would definitely make a difference to the ease of use I think.

i always fit mine verticaly as then when you get low on the trapeze your foot rolls back and locks you in, i don't know how easy it would be to get your foot out in an emergency but its fine for normal manouvers as i tend to stand up on the gunwale holding the trap handle to free the clip.

also if they were mounted horizontaly then if you capsized it would be harder to get your foot out, i'd have thought?

I say fit them at a slight angle as mine are upright and wish they weren't! It's not often that you are in the footloops stood vertical!
