We started our Wed night last night (18:30 start, moves to 19:00 later on). It's the most popular turnout in our club. It was bloody howling last night F5 all race battling against the tide. |

Burghfield started their Wednesday evening races last night. The light winds forecast had put a few people of, so we only had 55 boats out on the water: these varied from a brand new, never touchedthe water before Merlin to a 40 year old Entrerprise, with everything in between. This is a series of personal handicap races, with the handicaps for everyone changing every week: It makes for relatively uncrowded starts and VERY crowded finishes at 20:00.

Wednesday racing starts on 6th May at Wilsonian, but the weather has been so good in April (as past two years) that we may well start earlier next year. Despite all the difficulties of making an 18:30 start and having to do a duty for every three races sailed, the series is very popular. Actually, last year Wednesdays provided some of the best winds of the season, with only a couple of light airs affairs. How do other clubs handle duties? As hinted above, Wednesday competitors at WSC are expected to provide the duty crews for the series, assisted by people who just like to get to the club of a Wednesday even if they don't sail. The thinking behind that is that not everyone can make Wednesdays, either to race or sail, so it would be impractical and even unfair to put Weds on the regular duty roster which covers weekends... |

Sure its a battle to get out there and its generally light winds, but I love Wednesday racing. Makes the week go slower.. although the stupid clock goes slower on Wednesday.

Al don't forget the wonderful guided bus will soon be able to drop you off at the far side of the lake for Hunts. Then a 10 minute walk to the club. There are a lot of people who live around the Cambridge area who come to Hunts on a Wednesday evening. If you could find your way there I am sure you could blag a lift from someone. We don't have 'free' club boats but we do have a couple of Lasers that are available at a very reasonable rate (as well as Toppers, Picos and an RS Vision). The bus service is pretty good from Cambridge to St Ives as well, there are even some direct buses so the journey does not take too long from Drummer Street. Oh and Wednesday evening are usually light and shifty but friendly racing. Sundays can get a bit serious but still fun. I have found that an 8.1 is the boat to have when it is light though Edited by jeffers |

The forecast for tonight is quite promising - 8 - 9 knots. The question is, do I sail the mog, with no py, or do I go to Grafham and potentially drift in the contender?

Wednesdays are an excellent opportunity to establish a PY if your RO will play ball.

Yeah the burghfield series is fantastic! Gets a really good turnout most weeks - imagine 55 boats being described as 'only' and considered a small turnout and the pursuit bit adds to the fun. Many clubs could adopt their formula Littleton (where I sail) is thursday nights...and there they alternate the pursuit with a general handicap so you get to enjoy both types of racing. Starting this thursday but I'm going up north for the wilson... IMHO thursday night yotting is better than wednesday as you're closer to the weekend - so a nice relaxing sail thursday, post match beer and then home. 1 day at work and its the weekend! |

I would suggest you start with the Moth PY and take it from there (I know the boat is not a Moth but the characterisitics look very similar aside from it being longer). I will be there and as a member of the sailing committee can help the RO depending on who it is. The sailing sec might also be there as well as other members of the committee if required. Anyone else got any suggestions? |

Would you believe I lost track of the time (involved in re-varnishing a longboat mast, scraping a streaker (boat, not human) and walking the dog) so I missed it! what a dunderhead! As it is, I now appear to be spending my entire weekend at Hunts, so that might make up for it!
