Grafham started their Wednesday evening racing last week, and Hunts a little before that.  I didn't race last Wednesday due to not having a starter motor in my car, and I'm not racing this Wednesday because there is chuff all wind.

Who out there is racing on a Wednesday, or is it considered not worth the hassle because it is usually pretty light?

  • Alton Water's Summer racing is on a Monday evening
  • Grafham is Wednesday evening
  • Hythe is Thursday evening

That just leaves Tuesday and Friday evening to sort out + an open or club racing at the weekend - sorted LOL

I'm knackered just thinking of that schedule !

Wednesday evenings are a lot of hassle. Rush to get there, usually no wind, gets dark quickly and swarms of mosquitos!!

We race Boards on Tuesday evening, and are slowly encouraging dinghy
guys to take it up, but the transfer is a lot more difficult from dinghy to
board racing.

Having switched to sea sailing for weekends, and being without my own boat, I was actually looking for somewhere easily accesible (I lack a car, too!) for weeknight sailing- looked at Cam SC's site, thinking that although the stretch of water is somewhat limited, membership is cheap, club boats free to hire and it is nice and quick to get to from Cambridge. But no. Nothing.

I also looked at Cam SC but was put off by it being on a river.  Can you not get to St Ives and sail at Hunts?

Get on your bike! If you live in Cambridge is Grafham not an option?

Grafham is way too far to bike from Cambridge - you wouldn't get there before dark!

There, have got to be  shed load of folks working in Cambridge who live/sail at Hunts...blag a lift!  If I recall correctly the last bus back to Cambridge is post 2200 and it's about a 15 min walk from hunts to the bus station....problem solved.

Wednesdays are often more popular than Sundays at Scaling Dam. Usually 30+ boats in the summer.

I only get to race on a Wednesday now I've got small kids - sometimes get a potter around at the weekend... but with the kids.

wednesdays is very popular at Grafham, sometimes they get more than on a Sunday!

It's just too much hassle to get to from work each week!

We started our Wed night last night (18:30 start, moves to 19:00 later on).  It's the most popular turnout in our club.

It was bloody howling last night F5 all race battling against the tide.

Burghfield started their Wednesday evening races last night.

The light winds forecast had put a few people of, so we only had 55 boats out on the water: these varied from a brand new, never touchedthe water before Merlin to a 40 year old Entrerprise, with everything in between.

This is a series of personal handicap races, with the handicaps for everyone changing every week: It makes for relatively uncrowded starts and VERY crowded finishes at 20:00.

Wednesday racing starts on 6th May at Wilsonian, but the weather has been so good in April (as past two years) that we may well start earlier next year. Despite all the difficulties of making an 18:30 start and having to do a duty for every three races sailed, the series is very popular.

Actually, last year Wednesdays provided some of the best winds of the season, with only a couple of light airs affairs.

How do other clubs handle duties? As hinted above, Wednesday competitors at WSC are expected to provide the duty crews for the series, assisted by people who just like to get to the club of a Wednesday even if they don't sail. The thinking behind that is that not everyone can make Wednesdays, either to race or sail, so it would be impractical and even unfair to put Weds on the regular duty roster which covers weekends...

Sure its a battle to get out there and its generally light winds, but I love Wednesday racing.  Makes the week go slower.. although the stupid clock goes slower on Wednesday.

Al don't forget the wonderful guided bus will soon be able to drop you off at the far side of the lake for Hunts. Then a 10 minute walk to the club.

There are a lot of people who live around the Cambridge area who come to Hunts on a Wednesday evening. If you could find your way there I am sure you could blag a lift from someone.

We don't have 'free' club boats but we do have a couple of Lasers that are available at a very reasonable rate (as well as Toppers, Picos and an RS Vision).

The bus service is pretty good from Cambridge to St Ives as well, there are even some direct buses so the journey does not take too long from Drummer Street.

Oh and Wednesday evening are usually light and shifty but friendly racing. Sundays can get a bit serious but still fun. I have found that an 8.1 is the boat to have when it is light though

The forecast for tonight is quite promising - 8 - 9 knots.  The question is, do I sail the mog, with no py, or do I go to Grafham and potentially drift in the contender?

Wednesdays are an excellent opportunity to establish a PY if your RO will play ball.

Yeah the burghfield series is fantastic! Gets a really good turnout most weeks - imagine 55 boats being described as 'only' and considered a small turnout and the pursuit bit adds to the fun. Many clubs could adopt their formula

Littleton (where I sail) is thursday nights...and there they alternate the pursuit with a general handicap so you get to enjoy both types of racing. Starting this thursday but I'm going up north for the wilson...

IMHO thursday night yotting is better than wednesday as you're closer to the weekend - so a nice relaxing sail thursday, post match beer and then home. 1 day at work and its the weekend!

I would suggest you start with the Moth PY and take it from there (I know the boat is not a Moth but the characterisitics look very similar aside from it being longer).

I will be there and as a member of the sailing committee can help the RO depending on who it is. The sailing sec might also be there as well as other members of the committee if required.

Anyone else got any suggestions?

Would you believe I lost track of the time (involved in re-varnishing a longboat mast, scraping a streaker (boat, not human) and walking the dog) so I missed it!  what a dunderhead!  As it is, I now appear to be spending my entire weekend at Hunts, so that might make up for it!

We had a pursuit race too, I did surprising well despite fluffing the start when I was the only boat on the line (not as bad as the Phantom sailor who was giving me grief then sailed himself over ).

Pursuit next Wednesday too but I am working so wont be there.

This Wednesday at Burghfield we had 70 boats racing  with nine different classes in the top ten, including an Optimist. Last season we were regularly in the 70s

The personal handicap system makes it all a bit non-serious, but after a full working day who wants serious anyway? I'm just happy to get on the water, and then get a beer in the bar.

Of those top 10, one was a current Natioanl Champion, and another is sailing in his first season. Just to show the personal handicap is doing what it is intended to do!

just come back from wednesday sailing.15 boats out in a nasty wind (gusty force 3-5 with 45% degree shifts) 12 boats went swimming at some point, 10 made it round., all enjoyed the bar afterwards.

I didnt swim andI dont know how we survived as my burton week crew got her first experience of what a N12 feels like when it nose dives and the forestay dissapears beneath a foot of water.

that is her measurement as I was too busy running backwards to try to get the thing back above the water.

We had 20 boats out last night at HOAC/Queensmead SC. Of these 5 had crews who had never sailed before, ever!

Once exams are over for the younger members, racing will peek to about 30. this is a lot as HOAC is the same size as BLYM.

Good turnout at Hunts last night.  I managed not to sign on and not to know the course, nor really when I was starting.  Not that it mattered.  I'm still experimenting with the MOGO and tightened the rig up too much for the conditions, so I couldn't point and the sail just kept stalling.

A certain forum member barged his way to the front with his unfairly big rig and then proceeded to hog the lead till the finish....well done Paul, she says begrudgingly...
