Yes i've heard of people trying to team race in asymetrics- not a good plan!- i think i'd detract form the really close duels. I' say firefly's, ents, national 12's or similar work best.

no offence to people that sail symetrical boats but there less chance of things going wrong in the boat cos you go straight down wind and head for the line insted of gybeing where things go wrong more often there would be tight raceing so that would be good  do you think a new symetrical boat might be needed cos they havent come out with a new symatrical boat in long.  maybe a 520 maybe or something.

Nah is assys theyd all be gybing angles downwind, and theyre would be more chanceof spearation. Don't use spinnys in team racing at all i say. You want to be able to stop completelyand head in every possible angle to disrupt other team, rather than snapping poles/ having to drop kite.

Why no team racing?
1) Too many competitors when they're trying to reduce the numbers.
2) Too spectator/TV unfriendly because its a mystery what's going on unless you understand the rules.
3) Too much contrary the the olympic ideal of higher further faster - its all about slowing up the othet team not going fast yourself.

The most TV friendly aspect of sailing has to be match racing. Much easier for the avrege punter to understand when its 1 on 1 cos someone has to cross the line first. And the boats need to cover each other so you have a small course and plenty of close action

Well we currently have four full time teams in the Tornado and three of these teams contain someone who has been to the games in a Tornado... So with the competition hotting up it should be good for UK Tornado sailing, as whoever goes to the 2008 Olympics is likely to be on the pace!

I think explaining sailing to non-sailing viewers is, in my opinion, very like explaining the decathalon in athletics. I remember watching Daley Thompson winning Gold but coming around ninth in the final event (1500m I think). If commentators can explain this then they can surely explain sailing where the winner doesn't have to win the last race to win the event? Or maybe this is why we see so little of the decathalon now on TV...

I totally agree with Jim's comments on Team Racing - the IOC is constantly trying to reduce athlete numbers and this would require 6 athletes per team.

As for coverage, on the BBC Interactive service the coverage of the 49er, Tornado & Finn sailing was fantastic  when the wind was up - the short clips they showed on standard TV coverage seemed to concentrate on them in a pre-start or when there was no wind...

There is more tight racing in small singlehanders and symss than assys. Also it is a lot easier to gybe an asymertic than a symetric boat (keeping kite up that is), also if the assy crew knows what theyre doing there shouldnt be many gybing incidents.
