Im looking to buy a 49er in the next few weeks. Does anyone know what i should be looking for?. Weve seen sail no 60 for sale by simon hiscocks. Although its quite old, i would emagine its been well maintained by him and the set up should be spot on. ive got about £3k to spend. thanks in advance

i believe no 60 is his junkyard boat which was hit by a car in a traffic accident.
I sail 717 and my mate got it for 5900 but im sure you could do better than 60 for 3000!

With the older boats you have to watch for hull stiffness, if the boat has been getting used week in week out for a good few seasons, reckon the stiffness will be starting to go. Have a look at the topsides and if there are signs of indentation, it indicates the stiffness is starting to go. Might be worth considering the boat as a first 49er as you will get all the decent gear with it and replace the hull when you get used to the boat. From the sounds of it, and the gear he's offering for £3k according to Chris, sounds like a bit of bargain. Might know of two other boats in your price range, so will e-mail you details if I can.

49er's start to loose there stiffness as soon as they go sailing for the first time, no 60 is not scrapheap challenage which is the boat that was written off. It is another boat that had not been sailed for years until a couple of months ago which it was only sailed for a day. 49ers went from about 60 to 480 in 1 year so although 460 may sound loads newer its actually not.

For 3000 if it has a couple of sets of sails then go for it

Wonder why????

Hey Andy, why not buy a 49er once Aqua's sold, got quite a bit of potential for a fleet down here and you don't have all the hassle of changing rigs, tipping boats on sides, etc, etc....
