Im looking to buy a 49er in the next few weeks. Does anyone know what i should be looking for?. Weve seen sail no 60 for sale by simon hiscocks. Although its quite old, i would emagine its been well maintained by him and the set up should be spot on. ive got about £3k to spend. thanks in advance

i believe no 60 is his junkyard boat which was hit by a car in a traffic accident.
I sail 717 and my mate got it for 5900 but im sure you could do better than 60 for 3000!

With the older boats you have to watch for hull stiffness, if the boat has been getting used week in week out for a good few seasons, reckon the stiffness will be starting to go. Have a look at the topsides and if there are signs of indentation, it indicates the stiffness is starting to go. Might be worth considering the boat as a first 49er as you will get all the decent gear with it and replace the hull when you get used to the boat. From the sounds of it, and the gear he's offering for £3k according to Chris, sounds like a bit of bargain. Might know of two other boats in your price range, so will e-mail you details if I can.

49er's start to loose there stiffness as soon as they go sailing for the first time, no 60 is not scrapheap challenage which is the boat that was written off. It is another boat that had not been sailed for years until a couple of months ago which it was only sailed for a day. 49ers went from about 60 to 480 in 1 year so although 460 may sound loads newer its actually not.

For 3000 if it has a couple of sets of sails then go for it

Wonder why????

Hey Andy, why not buy a 49er once Aqua's sold, got quite a bit of potential for a fleet down here and you don't have all the hassle of changing rigs, tipping boats on sides, etc, etc....

Dito Owain - Remember I live in Southampton

ps Dennis - u know how schweeet 12ft skiffs are, and I got bored of my 49er - hence sold it and gave up the campain with jon!

+ its quicker to rig a 12 by tipping it on its side than jumping on a 49er main haylard! HAHA

Main halyard sorted, Kita hoists the main and finds no problems with it, plus we don't have to sail the boat tipped over to get it going in a straight line and reckon  the cut of the 49er kite is better for generating apparent wind in such that it generates less drag when the apparent wind moves forward..... We'll see which is quicker in the new year but wager you'll be seeing a lot of a pretty blue transom...and it's not the crews either

Boys boys, we all know that me and chris will be flying around at the front of the fleet next season. Talking of who made it out there, remember last saturday andy? i seem to remember a fireball blasting around the sound, while a little cherub was cleaning its sails lol!!!

Owain,

I can agree with Andy about the stiffness of 9er 055, as I sold it to Andy. Owned the boat for 2,5yrs and bought it from the uk class secretary who spent far too much money on her. Unless Andy trashed it, I expect she's still in awesome condition. Dennis the main halyard on 055 is a bit stiff, I used to have to stand on it to get the loop over the hook and with all 13.5st I could just hook it on! From memory the track is a bit tight with the Neilpryde main and could probably do with a bit of wet and dry running up it and some Mclube.

If the track is too stiff, might be worth looking at the head of the bolt rope and maybe taking it to the local sail makers and getting the bolt rope re-stitched. The problem which occured with the mast on my boat was due to the track joining part coming loose whilst in transit. Me and Owain spent a while bodging it, but were desperate to get sailing so the epoxy didn't set properly and was knocked out of alignment whilst on the water. It wasn't that much of a movement but as a result, when I went sailing with Andy, we had to use about 13 stone of brute force to get the main up..........There is another part of the story which includes a mast track exploding and rivot gun being substituted for a hammer, but not wanting to go off on a tangent about it. We replaced the track by cutting a uniform section of track out later on and placing it in as a stiff fix, as you initially suggested Owain. Reckon the reduction in gap helps maintain a more uniform bending characteristic, which is suggested by theory and also helps the sail to go smooth up without a 77kg lump at the bottom.

ye next time dennis, i think using a rivot gun to "adjust" the mast track may not be the best possible plan! im sure ive still got bits of it stuck in my head!!!! lol, ah well, we still made it out sailing before it got dark (just)
