Software to get the GPX format out of the 201 is very cheap, I think I paid in
the region of £5 for a program called Link2GPS for my Macintosh, cant
believe there isnt anything free out there in PC land.
Then using GPS Action Replay to get averages and track log displays, which
is free.

A USB to serial adapter can be found for less than £10 on ebay... If you are
spending £100 on a GPS, its hardly a big price to pay!

had 201 two years , battery still very good , software to expensive to buy if you only want print out of speeds , haven't found any free full packages on internet , but prob my incompetance ,

but who needs printouts when rs300 can do 24 knotts , nearly sold my cat and bought one , apart from fact i would sink it !!

got the Velocitek, only used once , very waterproof !!!.

got a usb connection ,plugged it into pc and got very strange photo in google earth (which it works with) , turned out I was looking at track of someone walking round factory in Thailand (or wherever) where unit was built , and they hadn't cleared memory .

it also works with another programm which shows tracks speeds and will playback over maps , couldn't suss that one with my dim brain , but at that point didn't realise I was looking at the track of its birth in asia !

fri afternoons eh , tik tik tik .

The 101 does have a port to output from, but unlike the 201 it doesn't come with a cable, so if you want to link it to your computer you need to go out and buy the lead.

As far as i could tell the differences between the 101 and 201 were that the 201 has rechargeable batteries and a lead to link it the computer, personally i bought a 101 and have had no issues using it.

Fair point, when I was looking I think the 201 was going for £90-100 on ebay. There don't seem to be any for sale on there at the moment though.

Can get the 101 on ebay from a number of dealers for £72 and the 201 is around £130 from most dealers.

I have searched the internet looking for answers and have failed to find them... I don't know why I didn't start looking here as I am sure someone can help...

What is the difference between the Garmin Foretrex 101 and the 201? All that I can find is that the 201 is rechargeable whereas the 101 uses AAA batteries. Is that the only difference? The 101 is roughly £50 cheaper so I am a little wary!

I used to take mine out in my N12, and although they are explicitly banned by the class rules I used to just attach it to the tiller facing downwards so I couldn't actually read it while sailing. At least going with the spirit of the rules if nothing else....

The point i'm trying to make is that if people are using gps during races when their class rules clearly prohibit such items, they have gained an unfair advantage over their competitors and should be open to protests.
