They would have issues even righting a 14, some of the older ones even have Al masts making this problem worse!

14s don't need a lot of wind to be fun downwind. You can be blasting around twin wiring without too much breeze at all  Much as I love mine, I'm not sure it is the right boat for lightweight 16 year olds though.

Very good point Mark, not sure about the Boss but if its anything like the 5000, it will be near impossible to right with 110kg (odd) on the board. Had two of us weighing over 140kg hanging off a righting line and the thing seeming to take an eternity to right. I can right the 49er with my own weight (77kg) on the board but reckon it wouldn't be possible in any wind with a 5000. Spice may be an option but if that's the case, why not just buy a cheap 4000 and save the money for a 800 or wait till you have more weight and buy a 5k, 49er, Boss, etc. Although the 4k is single wire, its much nicer to sail than the Spice, better performance and at least there would be other boats to race against.

.......sorry, hadn't read that part but totally agree. Sailed the Spice once, when it was breezy, terribly under powered, not well fitted out and wouldn't choose to do so again. Think 4000s are cracking boats and if it was me looking for a boat with a small budget and being in a lighter weight category, there would be no doubt in my mind about buying one. In comparision, the day which I sailed the Spice, I also went out in the same conditions in the afternoon on a 470 and the 470 seemed a rocket ship in comparison.

Don't get me wrong, the spice isn't fantastic, but for lightweight crews looking for a twin wire experience, cheap up keep and fun, its pretty good. Under powered is what its supposed to be so its more manageable. It is worth the consideration in my opinion, despite the cons, which im sure im about to get a list of as long as my arm....

The trouble is that underpowered is the last thing you want in a twin string boat.

If you have to wait till its dogs off chains to get two stringing it is just not worth the hastle and you would be quicker sailing it single string.

If it doesn't break it's too heavy; if it does it wasn't built right

There really is a gap in the market for a fun but easy to learn twin wire boat now. I guess the problem is, is that people will spend a season in it and move on to an 800.

This may have been why the 3k had bad times, people sailed it a bit and then got good enough for the 4k/whatever.

It's only underpowered if you are to heavy. Same as any boat. I would
agree with SetSail that the Spice isn't the greatest performance boat in the
world... but for cheap summer fun sailing on some nice swell in a 3 /4 off
St Mawes it would be great, low cost, low mainternace and low on the
RNLI's list of things to do that day... cos it's managable in pretty much all
conditions. I'd be happy with that sailing unsupported.

seems like spice is the way to go then...

underpowered is fine for our first twin trapeze boat, and we do not want to be going too fast 'cos st mawes bay is not that big!

At your weight you won't be underpowered in the Spice.  Having said that, there aren't many about racing - its the Iso/Buzz/Spice/Boss open at my club this weekend, and think I only saw two Spice's.  No Boss' turned up FYI.  Loads of ISO's and Buzzes however.

Spice looks nice enough, heard its slow upwind but its twin trap, so when you're a bit heavier you can get a 5000, which is an excellent step towards the 18ft Skiff... If you have ambitions.

Or there is another cherub for sale on the website. HERE It's got a pukka 97 rules rig and is a quick design. Think it needs a bit of DIY to get it on the water but she will be a real weapon specially if you get the hang of it! I'm sure there are enough people about locally depending on where you live who could get you on the water in a weekend or a few evenings.
