Apologies Rick - I do disagree with your first post so there was a little devilment in cherry picking that quote. But you did bring Eddie the Eagle into the discussion as a 'classic case' (of media hype) which did seem to infer that the report on Scott (and others) whilst not a 'classic case' was to some degree the same. Again, there was an article from the Laser Association that was the 'worthy report' you wanted giving all the usual details of winners etc. So what is wrong with the RYA doing an extra report on how the Brits did? I think most of us want to know about the Brits performance. RE Objectives - How do we know what Scotts objectives were and whether he acheived them? We're told objectives should be acheivable / realistic. For Scott in this Championship a realistic objective could well have been a Top Ten result - which he acheived. His longer term objective may well be Olympic Gold / World Champion - but it would be unrealistic for that to be his target this year. Others may have underperformed against their objectives but I doubt if Scott did. |

Hector - that is a complete misquote. That comment was in reference to the media circus that followed Eddie the Eagle not the report on the laser worlds. The result of Scott was excellent - my comment was that reporting this Top Brit diminishes that results - I'd have said that reporting the actual result would have been more worthy. Rick |

Poor performance? You are kidding aren't you Rick. Scotts' was an excellent performance and well worthy of a report. Perhaps the main point here is that the event report from the Laser Class association did concentrate on the first few places http://www.yachtsandyachting.com/news/?article=23454 That report presumably goes to all mags and websites worldwide. The RYAs' report told us how the Brits did - and as I want to know about that I see nothing boring or wrong about the RYA providing Y&Y with just such a report. |

Yeah but you have to understand that, the Musto Skiff report is only good because it fits your purpose, ie promoting the class as a whole and providing an overview of the event to those who are interested. If you look at the 'Top Brit' report you will notice it is written by the RYA who's interests are promoting British sailors at events as well as providing info about the event.
I do not like reporting like this but you must realise a report serves as both an advert and a way of getting info to those interested (plus people like to see their name somewhere.) |

I reckon I'd have had a chance of beating that swimmer ... Here is an event report that I think ticks all the boxes. http://www.mustoskiff.com/reports-and-news/2006/tide-ride.ht m Mentions; - The winners |

Very true. I think that it is good to make note of the best improvers too as it gives them a mental pat on the back and gives some sort of reward for their efforts.
Eddie the Eagle is one... that swimmer a few years ago was another case point Rick. How he even got to the games was a myth to me. He may have been the best from his village but to watch that at an elite event was a joke. All of the british development squad would have been faster than him but they didn't get a chance for their big break. |

Now then calm down chaps don't get this all about face. That is not what I ment and you know that. Everyone who enters a competition is worthy and without a fleet we would of course have no winners. What I was saying is I'm not into the sort of media hype that is created around poor performance. Eddie the Eagle is the classis case ,,, Now when it comes to event reports I think the report should cover things that are newsworthy and of interest; I would suggest this would include; - Details of the winners A report simply can't mention everyone who shows up but I think if it covers the above points then it's a fair job.
