I think CCTV is the best bet becuase if they want to steal somethng they will. the only other way is to make the place look like a maximum security prison or build a moat (unfortunatley the moat idea will only work at some clubs at high tide)
Lots of thefts have happend here and its getting real old now |

Since our club lawnmowers were nicked by thieves who came armed with an oxy torch and burned the lock out of a something like 5mm thick steel door I've been wondering how much use any security precautions are...

also remember that wheel clamps and hitch locks are only 'there to make it a less tempting steal, as those who know what there looking for will come with tools for the job! even a set of wheels!!
we've had our caravan(yes my family are one of those annoying caravan'ers) on the drive with wheel clamp and hitch lock and they still managed to tow it away as they froze the locks and hit them with a hammer! shame that a leg on the van wasn't working properly and fell down at a hump... ![]() ![]() Edited by ratface |

Trouble is, if one person takes the wheels home, and another the hitch, it is pretty easy to make 1 working trailer! I had to take someone's boat home to do some work on it once, and they had forgotten that the tow hitch had been removed. It took maybe 10 minutes to nick one off my trailer and bolt it on. Mind you, another time I had to go and collect a boat on a trailer from an AA compound when the car had broken down and the owner had had to leave the boat. It was padlocked through the hitch handle so it wouldn't lift. Took 20 seconds max with a new hack saw blade to get it off.
I think I stored my trailer at Fox's boatyard when I sailed from Restronguet. I suspect there are rabbit hutch homes on that site now, but there may be another yard willing to store it for a small amount of money? Edited by Rupert |

I picked up a towbar lock £30 from Halfords and very secure. I then chain the road base and combi together with a motor bike chain and a big pad lock £20 from B&Q. Although not 100% secure as I am sure most locks are not, at least I know I would have put off the casual thief and made life a little difficult for the determinded one. Alternatively take the wheels home. |

I have heard that dinghy trailers are very nickable in there own right. they are generally strong a frame type and can easily have a box bolted on them and the serial number plaques drilled off or changed.

it's not a space issue- it's a security issue I'm guessing. I've been in a club before with a less-than-secure dinghy park, that's is in a secluded location. The rule there for road bases (in order of preference) was: A: Take it home B: Take the tow-bar off C: Invest in a proper lock for the tow-bar- one of the ones with a ball that sits inside it. Your boat might not be worth stealing, but someone elses may be. Option C might be an idea for Tom? He'd be advised to run it past the club first. |

Not allowed to keep your road base under your boat !!!!!
What kind of stupid rule is that? A combi base hardly takes up any more space than a trolley and the whole sherbang can be tied down just as effectively. Keep the 300 on the combi, at Restrongeut and tell them to poke it ! |
