But there's no split-toe boots I've seen with the hiking grip on the upper side- if you ever properly hiked out on your boat (which isn't really something you should be doing much on a single wire two man boat, I'll grant you) you would understand.

I've got a pair of zip-less 3mm Typhoon "hybrid" ones, which are pretty good (though the thin trapezeing style sole may prove their downfall) and pair of chunky 5mm zip-up boots from Decathlon- think they cost be about €20 a few years ago, and the only damage so far is thanks to the "industrial sandpaper as deck-grip" fiasco. Lovely and toasty, with a "fleecy" type lining.

My Typhoon dinghy boots lasted me 10 years and were great.   My new Gill trapeze boots are comfy and warm (though it's not winter yet) but I haven't a hope of getting the zip to stay up.

I went against splitties because I didn't want to to hurt my delicate little footsies wandering round on shore.  On that note, if I'm doing safety boat I wear Aigle boots and if I'm teaching in the summer I wear cheap water shoes from Aldi!

I've been using the Magic Marine "X-lock" zip up boots for three years. I don't find them comfy as they seem to "suck" onto my feet which feels like they're going to dislocate my feet if I point my toes... The zips have only just started to come undone this last couple of months. They are wearing out now, so I'll get some new boots for next year (thinking of the Gill ones until now!). I might be tempted by the Ronstan Race Boots, mainly because of the solid sole.

I also have a pair of Crewsaver Sports Boots for use with my drysuit - These don't have zips, just wrap-around velcro straps, and I find them very comfortable.

What are you on about?

What pray tell me is the difference between that bit of nylon hiking strop
and the inside of a footstrap?

Surely the strain is not such that they wear out any more than they might
in windsurf straps, I'll fall about helpless with mirth, in fact wait a mo, I've
been using them none stop now for two years and that's dinghy racing
twice a week, plus longboard racing at least once a week, then the other
stuff I do, kiting etc.

I must be missing something here - or maybe you are.

PS You may not have noticed, its' been windy this year and we're in an
overpowered boat, I've been hiking plenty..

absolutly brill boots for sailing. (in a 29er anyway)

 

as for hiking i wear siple ziper boots and i too have the same zip issues!

id get something shoe type or with strps, no zips.

normally i hike off my ankles or shins in the feva because i think im getting a bit too big and if i hike off my feet its the backof my shins that are on the gunwhales.

yea its alot of levreage but it hurts

trapezings nicer in that respect

Decathlon,  £13, velcro round the top a good grippy sole and renforcement for hiking.
mind you fashion is of no interest to me, why pay more?

The Rooster Hiking Boots are great in use (I have three pairs in rotation).
The only issues I have are they could do with a pull tab on ankle so I don't keep putting my finger through the neoprene. And if you have a boat park/launching area with sharp gravel the soles are a bit thin of occasion.

Some of the Zhik ones are pretty good, i dont have a pair but my crew has the "racing boot" and they're really good, super grippy and not too thick.

Magic Marine also do an 'X-Lock' hiking boot that does without the zip entirely, they rely on stretchy neoprene around the ankle and have a simple velcro flap at the top.... very comfy but seem to have quite thin soles - they seem hard-wearing enough but you do feel every loose stone on the slipway !
