Know quite a few sailors who have Volvo estates and sail 49ers

Even know of a mate who hopefully just picked up a very nice Audi Estate          (  Les)

What you find is estate cars suit sailing very well as you can actually fit sails in them without them being crushed up against the wind-screen giving you little room to change gear or pull up the hand-brake.

Just dont stop then ... think of the gearstick as a "set and forget" control, and just use the accelerator and clutch for speed control!

Or alternatley .. just put most of the kit in the boat. Why waste all that empty space?

Oh .. and RS Vareo and no car yet! (Havnt even started learning tbh )

Yeah but you don't tow the boat everytime you sail, and leaving kit on the boat is not the best of ideas. Thank god we have a box trailer to chuck everything in or we'd be dragging big sails and stuff on to the ferry everytime we go sailing, and its a very, very small ferry we get.

Driving advice from someone who hasn't started to learn to drive yet
Also have a feeling the kit for a Vareo will take up a bit less space than 5k or 49er kit! My laser kit would easily fit in the boot of my 306, my 5000 stuff easily filled the car... twice over

Iain C list was right on the money, liked it very much, especially the Wayfarer bit. Too true, brought by people who think they need the space, then realise they can't get it's fat a*** down the slipway/driveway.

As for the oppie, must be a Ford Escort (for you who remember Escorts), just jump in and go, bump into anything and everything, indistructable and if bits fall off, just bung in and old broom handle/spare spar lots of duct tape or anything to hand and it just keeps going............

I have a diesel estate, so I'm not about to break any new barriers.

Yeh .. im more of an "ideas" person than an actual "doing" person!

And yes, The vareo kit doesnt take a lot of space at all .. but you can leave the sails in most boats anyway as the cover can keep them in it .. that way the only space your using in the car is for the foils ... unless you leave them in the hull as well :D
