Respective manufacturer's figures:-

29er main+jib   = 12.5sq.m., spinny = 15sq.m.   fitted hull wt = 70 kg

rs500 main+jib = 13.1sq.m., spinny = 14.8sq.m. fitted hull wt = ? (closer to 70kg than 80kg, I reckon)

The 500 is going to have to be very heavy not to be a close boat to the 29er and may still be upright when the 29er is not..............

i doubt the 500 will even touch a 29er.  not that i would like to say it but the 29er has a similar speed to a 4k. and i dont think a 500 will be catching us.  it isnt just the size of the sails it is the hull shape and the design of the sails etc.

Depends who's sailing it!  But seriously 29ers are not as hard to sail as everyone thinks. The 500 looks very similar in hull shape and sail area so I dont think it will be much 'easier' to sail.

Have to agree here. if you take the buzz for example, pretty bad hull shape really and a spinni of 17.40 sq.m. compared to the 29er 15sq.m and even with the bigger sails is still a lot slower.

yer well the buzz has bigger sails than the 4k but a buzz wouldnt even touch a 4k.  it is more about how they all come together to make the boat.

Careful building in epoxy / woven cloth can more than explain a 30kg saving over a boat mass-produced by a work-experience lad armed with a chopped strand/polyester gun!

And light weight is the best way to go faster - lighter loads, more speed, easier sailing.

Generally build is very good, but I think Ovi does a slightly better job. It'll be interesting to see if buil quality is maintained as rumour has it Woofy is going to start making them in Brazil!

Certainly not poor construction, they're good for mass market boats but they're not, of course, remotely in the same league as the best custom boats. Not a criticismn, just a fact of life/reflection of the price.

Has anyone managed to book an RS500 test sail at Burghfield yet?
