Careful building in epoxy / woven cloth can more than explain a 30kg saving over a boat mass-produced by a work-experience lad armed with a chopped strand/polyester gun! And light weight is the best way to go faster - lighter loads, more speed, easier sailing. |

yer well the buzz has bigger sails than the 4k but a buzz wouldnt even touch a 4k. it is more about how they all come together to make the boat. |

Have to agree here. if you take the buzz for example, pretty bad hull shape really and a spinni of 17.40 sq.m. compared to the 29er 15sq.m and even with the bigger sails is still a lot slower. |

i doubt the 500 will even touch a 29er. not that i would like to say it but the 29er has a similar speed to a 4k. and i dont think a 500 will be catching us. it isnt just the size of the sails it is the hull shape and the design of the sails etc.

Respective manufacturer's figures:- 29er main+jib = 12.5sq.m., spinny = 15sq.m. fitted hull wt = 70 kg rs500 main+jib = 13.1sq.m., spinny = 14.8sq.m. fitted hull wt = ? (closer to 70kg than 80kg, I reckon) The 500 is going to have to be very heavy not to be a close boat to the 29er and may still be upright when the 29er is not.............. |

Is the 29er 12.5 + 15 or 13.4 + 17 though...if you look in different places you get a different answer!
