I'm very much looking forward to testing the RS 500, which at first sight, looks ideal for us.

Sounds perfect for a Fireball - most arguments against are weak.... see earlier posts.

not of course though I would want to discourage anyone from buying a potentially great boat from a great manufacturer. You choose.

Well there are only so many shapes you can make a boat guys...

There are? That must explain why the Firefly and the 49er look so alike...

Though in the case of the RS boats, I would assume the design team have a belief in the hull shapes they come up with, (whether the main designer be Morrison or Handley) so there is bound to be a "look" to their boats. Just as it is easy to tell a boat built by Fairey Marine even after all these years, I would think RS want people to see a boat (even without sails up) and think "that looks like an RS".

Looks like a cross between a stretched vario and a laser 3k with a little added vago to me.

Like cars did a few years back, all designs seem to be tending towards the same market "optimum" shape.   Are they all using the same design software?

But hang on ... it's got nearly as much sail area as a 29er; plenty more than a 3k or a Vago and ought weigh no more than a v3000.  Plus chined, flat transome hull.  Might be quite quick.

Lot of boats to try out this summer.

Think you'll be disappointed with the weight, Nick A. My guess after talking with the guys on the stand at the Boat Show is 80-90kg hull weight (it's just polyester, after all), c.f. a V3000's 50kg. Guess which will be quicker and easier!

Interesting comparing sail areas (I know it's not the only thing to worry about) but........

                         VAGO        29er          500

Main+ Jib         12         &nbs p;     12.5            13.1

Assy         &n bsp;     13                15        &nbs p;      14.8

Total         & nbsp;     25         &nbs p;      27.5              27.9

Is the 29er 12.5 + 15 or 13.4 + 17 though...if you look in different places you get a different answer!
