I agree Rick I think this an interesting topic that should be discussed.
I suppose Stefan has no proof. I do not see why manufacturers can't show their numbers, unless certain clients don't want their names out there. |

You are missing the point completely. It's not a case of "can't". Read Rick's last post. |

From my experience the owners are keen as mustard to be listed. On the Musto site it justs shows name and club no personal data. We have never had anyone ask to remove their name. It is really helpful to prospective new owners as they can see where the boats are based. I think this would be a good thing for all class associsations to do ... http://www.mustoskiff.com/sailors-database.htm Rick |

On the subject of numbers, when I was RS300 class rep I was delighted to see the class had reached the 500's, having only seen boats up to 48something, so I phoned RS to ask where the 20 new boats were and was told "it's hard to sell those up to the next hundred", so they'd just started again at 500 (or 501). Rather like they actually only started at 301... So yes, the fact that some SMOD'S jump numbers is well known.

... so how do people really know how many of any class actually exist? Rick Edited by Guest#260 |

Ah, that explains why they were so coy about number of boats sold in the last racing classes review. Tell no lies eh:-) |

In some classes, nobody knows for sure. Exclude SMODs for a moment. The class association will rarely be in touch with everyone who owns a boat, as anyone who has ever been involved with running a class association will know. So for those missing numbers, were they built or weren't they? In some cases, it may be known that numbers were allocated but not built. In other case, it may be known that the boat was built but its whereabouts are unknown. However in some cases, the class association just doesn't know. Bear in mind that classes are generally run by volunteers whose record-keeping is not always completely meticulous and records frequently get transferred from one class secretary to the next. In terms of classes listing owners, my experience has been that people don't mind this information being available within the class but some owners very firmly refuse to make it fully public. |

I am sure someone else will fill us in but I am not sure the above is true. When I sailed Mirror, 420, 470 & Fireball I am sure the number was issued by the RYA or association when the boats were measured not then they were planned so in those classes I believe the sail numbers are an accurate measure of numbers ... I could be wrong but that is how I recall it. Rick |

I'm fairly sure in the Solo you have to have the number carved into the boat on wooden boats, so this must be there before measurement: I wonder if the number is issued on payment of the builders fee?
