well all you have to do to a laser to increase the price is buy a laser that hasnt got a xd kit on it then you have at least uped the price by around 500 and it will only cost u 300   could be a good way of making money on the side.

Does anyone think that the people on the Running casts thread would like to know all about this......Oh hold on we are talking about SMODS that are more than  months old.  That would be the real world then

I was in a similar position in the mid 90's when I came back into sailing after a 10 year lay off. The number of new classes around at that time seemed incredible, but I decided to stick with a class I knew and I bought an old Laser for £500. I sailed it most sundays for 5 seasons then sold it for £400. Once I'd got a 2nd hand sail off one of the top guys I was half competitive at club level.  It never came home from the club in all that time too,  so from a cost as well as maintenance point of view a decent older Laser is one of sailings real bargains.

I got back into sailing after an 18 year layoff and what did I buy?  A laser.  It cost me £900 and I had a very enjoyable 12 months in all weathers and temperatures.  I then had a slightly frustrating 6 months where I was only enjoying myself when everyone else was going back in because it was too windy (I am 6' and 15+ stone)

So I sold the laser (£900) bought 541 and have sailed her twice and done a lot of swimming!!

Buy the laser join a club and go sailing for 12 months and then decide what you want to do, as you will probably not loose much if any money on the laser once you decide to upgrade

Hear hear to that, my first Laser was £500, I sold it for pretty much the same 2 years later, that not bad going in anyones book!

For some reason I thought that it would be a good idea to get 541 having never been on a trapeze before

Now that is a learning curve

YES God damn it.... I want the season to start again

That makes me even more determined - I'm going to get a Contender and we'll be able to swap recipes for hot chocolate and good tips on thermals!
