Hi

I am a 17 year old who is new to the uk coming from kenya.

I did most of my sailing in lasers  and a bit in fireballs, but now am thinking about trying a new class, would be cool to here peoples opinions on which classes are cometitive, and fun to sail

well how much do you have to spend

i would say moving up from laser a rs vareo would be a good move

then you have a kite as well

I think you need to be more specific or everyone will just tell you to get the class they sail and love which may not be the best for you.

Are you looking for Crewed or sSnglehanded?
Hiking, Single trap, Twin string?
Are you after a kite? symetric/assymetric?
Where is it likely to be sailed?

Since I have not have sailed in a large variaty of boats (just laser 1's and fireballs) I am fairly open to try out various classes, provided that they have an active fleet and you don't have to be too hot to sail them

Close racing is the main thing although it would be nice to be able to take a mate out on it

Il likely get rinsed for saying this as im sure most people on here have noticed my oppinion of lasers but id agreed with turnturtle.
Get what you feel comfortable with to start off and once youve sailed here for a few months you'll be able to make up your own mind on where you want to head next

that must have been hard for you Isis.  But yeah i think you should stick to what you know for now.  I can say from experience that lasers actually have excellent racing all year round and then if you want to move on you'd be better informed and will probably make a better decision than you would now.

Such SMOD bashing usually comes from those who couldn't sail them!

Btw Stu- I know you can sail a laser pretty well!

-------------

Posted By: Isis
Date Posted: 25 Jan 06 at 8:12pm
Harry, the vast majority of my SMOD bashing is meant in jest and just plays on how people get so worked up about the whole thing.
If you want to have a chat about my succsess in the laser compared to the moth I sail now knock me up on MSN, im not going to turn this into another debate.

Best to keep all the reasons why we're so much better than smodeys in one http://www.yachtsandyachting.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=1418 - thread   anyway

It was meant to be a joke mate- not trying to knock your sailing ability. using the one argument SMODs have, but i don't think we can compete now you have your own smilies etc.!

smods suck. they get really boring and are expensive casue u have to buy the parts from the company.  also have u noticed that all laser sailors are t***ts and that its the same with the youth squad.

anyway look at getting a feva if you are small or a 505 if youy are large.

All of the Laser sailors? Old and young? Male and female?? No exception????? Blimey, that's an awful lot of people! Have you met them all, dear Mr Love?

I fail to understand how that type of comment can help broaden the debate. Please have a look at the numerous (but no so varied) opinions on SMODs in other threads and see that your side of the argument has been done to death, thank you.

SMOD sailing is too expensive esspecially for students, i've found the sailors are not as sociable either, though i have to be carefull with what i say because i did sail lasers for 3 years

Really Olly......I think you should meet some more then. Laser sailors are generally competitive on the water but friendly enough off (at club level anyway, a lot of the circuit and international crowd take it far too seriously!)

I would have to agree with turnturtle (makes a change)

I got back into sailing after an 18 year layoff and what did I buy?  A laser.  It cost me £900 and I had a very enjoyable 12 months in all weathers and temperatures.  I then had a slightly frustrating 6 months where I was only enjoying myself when everyone else was going back in because it was too windy (I am 6' and 15+ stone)

So I sold the laser (£900) bought 541 and have sailed her twice and done a lot of swimming!!

Buy the laser join a club and go sailing for 12 months and then decide what you want to do, as you will probably not loose much if any money on the laser once you decide to upgrade

The last ime out, the air temperature was -2C.  I had to break the ice off the boat cover and having spent 20 minutes in the water (I could not get her up) I ended up been escorted in by the rescue boat with early stages of hypothermia

YES God damn it.... I want the season to start again

For some reason I thought that it would be a good idea to get 541 having never been on a trapeze before

Now that is a learning curve

I was in a similar position in the mid 90's when I came back into sailing after a 10 year lay off. The number of new classes around at that time seemed incredible, but I decided to stick with a class I knew and I bought an old Laser for £500. I sailed it most sundays for 5 seasons then sold it for £400. Once I'd got a 2nd hand sail off one of the top guys I was half competitive at club level.  It never came home from the club in all that time too,  so from a cost as well as maintenance point of view a decent older Laser is one of sailings real bargains.

well all you have to do to a laser to increase the price is buy a laser that hasnt got a xd kit on it then you have at least uped the price by around 500 and it will only cost u 300  could be a good way of making money on the side.
