Appart for the weight of the 5000, she was a good boat to sail and race. The boat may not be as advanced as newer classes but for the prices and type of performance you can get out of the boat, they are still good boats and really cheap to run.

There in lies the point, there's no current volume asymetric that can be compared to a 505. If there was and it had a self tacker carbon rig, I'm sure some would migrate.

The 5000 was marketed around two pre-production demo boats that were hell of a lot lighter than finished item. With that kind of weight it was never going to be long term.

Clubs naturally develop small groups of the same type of craft if it's reasonably mainstream.

With SMODS popping out every five minutes how many clubs will have fleets of anything?? lets face the truth, every club has its set of people who will buy the latest boat. Most of the time though I have a sneaking suspicion they only do so to show they can afford it :-)

With 175 boats at the Worlds I don't really think you can discount the 5oh as a has been boat.

Likewise the FD's will normaly attract 100 boats at a major event, not bad for an ex-olympic class, someone must still love it :-)

The 5 toner was pitched at the same 5oh / FD sailors market.. but despite being the fun / modern boat of it's day you can pick them up dirt cheap now and when was the last one built? 2 years ago?

Maybe I'm just venting disappointment as having heard whispers about the 500 earlier in the year I was all excited....

I think the above is the reason the thread generated so much interest, all those with ISOs, 4000 and at the top end of the weight for a Buzz were hoping for a product to fill their need. Never mind eh, just keep waiting.

yes I agree- there are many ex-rugby players or overfed teenagers who are over 15 stone , and have similar mates. "go sail the 505,FD finn or phantom." "er no thanks we want something fun and modern with a quick learning curve ie single or no traps."

First boat quoted (always the 505 if you are 18 stone like me) , well how many clubs have fleets of  them now? an expensive travllers boat- now they have approved carbon rigs, the sky is the limit. IDeal for heavy guys in the pre- assym period. FD is in the same box IMHO and worse at club level.

as for the others, yawn.

I wasn't so much calling for another design, as pointing out that if you're going to launch a two-handed, single trap assy boat, why produce one that only works for teenagers?  The FB demonstrates very well that a boat can be fast, challenging, and also carry a very wide weight & skill range, so why do the modern assy designs seem to focus on the extreme ends of the spectrum with 49er / 800s requiring more space & skill than many clubs & crews have, whilst Vision, Buzz etc aren't challenging enough for a good adult club sailor.

Maybe I'm just venting disappointment as having heard whispers about the 500 earlier in the year I was all excited....

Are you calling for ANOTHER design as well?

Yeah but that Matt Johnson talk rubbish most of the time . What I meant was that the dominent force in the class has ceased to be Topper. Most of the decisions and control are now with the 'punters' not evil corporate organisations (just a joke for those that can't spot irony).
