Skiffie, Dont think anyone was saying you call n hemisphere boats punts. But there is a class Called a Norfolk Punt in the UK. I dont know much about them to be honest but they are a wild thing designed for sailing around on the Norfolk Broads. In development terms they followed the same pathway as the skiffs in the South Hemi but with different outcomes and perhaps not quite as exotic in construction terms. I reserve the right to be completely wrong on the last point.

I don't think they're quite skiffs... but lovely looking boats anyway.

I'm sure if the Norfolk Punt blokes if I started calling some boats not seem down here "punts", especially if they are wild, development boats, this thread would be defending the word "PUNT" not the word "SKIFF". I did use the word "punt" as an example, it could have been"shell" or "skull" or any other word. Just think of the Norfolk Punt blokes would be just as aggressive about defending their class name being used on an Optimist or a Lark or a Moth Scow, and their LIVE NEAR YOU, as lucky for you we are all the way over here. |

If you search for "skiff " on google what comes up is mostly rowing boats and small motor boats.
in the definitions of online dictionaries the description that most often comes up is small light flat bottomed boat quite often described as being powered by oars, sails or moters |

I think it's pretty safe to say that the 13ft skiff class is officially known as just that. They've got a couple of seasons under there belt now and are a pretty quick boat. When you say it was updated in Feb, thats Feb 04. They are also apparently in the process of beefing them up a bit with a bit more sail. We went up against one at Drummoyne (Sydney) early this year in our 16. It was about 10 knots and there uphill boatspeed wasn't to far short of ours however they did lack our height. Maybe they were just reaching a bit but can't be sure. In my opinion the class will only ever be sailed out of a Manly and maybe further down the track Belmont 16's. The 29er is an excellent boat with good international support, and is in the exact same market. I think the skiff association had good intentions because they wanted to introduce a boat that didn't have the strict 'buy all your gear from this manufacturer policy' However, sailing is already flooded with too many classes, and to me it just cheapens titles. |

13' skiff looks like a 29er only with more string and a foot less hull. (quickly ducks to miss hail of large blunt objects)

depends what you define as best? 18fter is fastest i think but the 49ers handicap has been changed so? but i would love a b14 more comfortable. but the club slip way isnt wide enough. and i dont fancy putting wings on and off every time i want to go ssailing.
