Matt, The MPS was launched some time before the 700 and won the ISAF single hander trials in Carnac by a country mile. LDC presented the RS600 and a modified RS600 with a kite. It was after the MPS had shown it's class that LDC developed the RS700. LDC of course had the advantage of a RS600 customer base to canabalise for quick early sales. All this happened long before I had any involvement in the class. Rick |

Cheers Matt ... when the 3000 become a serious 'contender' do you fancy a class link? Edited by yellowhammer |

If you mean sharing events I'd be cautious as when most people see a well sailed Contender (not many of them at Scaling Dam) they tend to want one!

So you wouldn't class contenders as a class fading from popularity then, in the face of RS700s, Musto Skiffs, etc? How many Contenders are there around the country? Do you get to travellers series events Matt? Are they well supported? The advantage of a 2-man boat is that even if you only get 10 boats at a meet, that's 20 people, so a bit more atmosphere. Or maybe it's a disadvantage as twice as many people need to get themselves organised!

Do you think, though, that the RS700 has made the single handed trapeze assymetric much more acceptable as a concept to the sailing world in general - hence providing the motivation for many to move into the MPS as it appears to be a better boat? I certainly remember seeing the MPS when it first appeared and thinking that it was possibly pushing the envelope too far... |

Some figures for you Average boats per open meeting this year 26 (last year average 20) 56 boats at the Nationals (last year 50) 30 plus boats going to the Isle of Wight this weekend 146 boats at last years World Championship. Good boats sell in days from the BCA website All looks pretty healthy to me but I am slightly biased. Also lots of Contender sailours take their families to open meetings so there is plenty of atmosphere. |

The Contender is certainly not dead, in fact it's going from styrength to strength. In fact all of the single handed trapeze classes are doing well at the moment. The 700 continues to sell well and is seeing growing numbers on the circuit, the 600 has a very active association attracting a lot of students who can now afford these relative bargains and the MPS class seems to be realising it's International aspirations. I personally bought the RS700 because it looked to be more manageable without much if any compromise in speed. As an ex Laser sailor I didn't even consider the MPS as it appears to be a much more extreme class. I'm pleased I had the choice! The 700 wasn't easy to get to grips with but it is an achievable challenge. It has certainly got me very excited about sailing at a time when I was really fed up with trying to keep up with the youngsters in the Laser.

I think Mark probably said it all but if you want an un-biased idea of how the class is just look at the stats kindly provided by Y&Y on the Contender nationals attendance. I think it'd be hard to find a more stable fleet, the only real dip was 2003 and that's because the Worlds was also in the UK and it was oop north which is not really Contender territory... at the moment. I usually plan to do about 2 opens a year and sneak in the Inlands and/or Nationals when the wife isn't looking. I'm currently trying to drum up interest where I sail with an eye to increasing the 'Northern exposure' of the class. Edited by Matt Jackson |

As my crew grows up and becomes less available I am seriously thinking about a Contender (especially if I could pick one up cheapish)as a second boat. several people have suggested a laser, but I used to have one and the're b***** hard work to sail well and I fancy the challenge of a trapeze. If I weighed less it would be a Moth. As for modern boats the Vareo appeals but I don't really fancy either the 600 or 700 and anyway I can't run to the expense a secondhand one would cost as a second boat.

You can pick up a reliable club racer with the right kit on it for around £1200 a really nice one for £2500 to £3000. The real surprise though is how many come up on ebay at the moment (about one every month or so) that look like they have most of what you want and frequently fetch less than a grand.
