Don't confuse being in the bargain bucket with being down and out. Many classes experience a "dead cat bounce" as prices drop and get a new lease of life. That's why the 600 is doing OK as they now offer superb value for money. But ... the class will never grow as there are no new boats being built. Rick |

I think the figures for the enterprise, wayfarer, RS and 2000 could have been distorted a bit by sailing schools buying at the start of a season. All nice boats thou.... The solo seems to be on a big up at the moment, over 100 boats at the inlands 2 years running - not bad.

Anyone buy a new Rover 12 months ago? We're all slaves to market forces! Typical 'budget' SMOD buyers can afford to write of 100% depreciation over 2-3 years. What do they care about longevity of the class? |

" I don't think the new crop of classes are failing any more regularly than
they did in the past - there is just a bigger marketing budget behind
them so they do it more publically!"
Yes, those of us who were around in the 70's probably remember how the Laser decimated other single handed fleets. You don't see many Bonitos, Minisails, Toys etc around nowadays. But my point was really that none of the "new" (ie 90's onwards) classes have done that to "traditional" classes in the way the Laser did back in the 70's. So I'd still argue that from the 90's onwards there have been more "new" class failures than "traditional" ones. Having said that, I'm convinced there is a huge market for an idiot proof relatively low cost/moderate performance plastic sit in boat aimed at the general club racer and recreational sailer. So I'm very interested to see how the RS Vision and the like get on. |

Mate, did you really talk about "investing" in a boat! You need a reality check... Edited by JimC |

Sorry, I don't get it. Yes boats are a hobby but they're also my third largest spend after the house and car, so why would not wanting to get stitched up financially need a reality check? |

Very funny! I guess its down to the level you sail at, as a humble club hack sailing isn't really too expensive - thats what I keep telling the wife anyway. |

buying a new boat is an investment, there's a huge recreational and emotional payback to be had if you get it right.. let's face it leisure time is precious, you don't want to spend it sailing a dog... regardless of the type of boat it always depresses me when I see comments like "sailed less than 10 times" in the for sale ads... someone obviously didn't get what they thouight they were going to and must have suffered major disappointment as a result |

I saw an ad recently for a Laser Eps which said "never been sailed" That must be one of the worst investments ever!! Boats are like cars, you should expect to pay to keep them going and to not get back what you paid for them. |
