as i have a moth myself i got that little question: how do you compare
the laser and the moth?? moth is extremely about boathandling and your
ability and the laser is rather boring i think! anyway you should
really go for a moth. it´s cheaper than a laser and you will have more
fun!

The other good thing about a Moth is that there everyone starts off in a justified and ancient £500 one, so there will be lots of meaningful racing at the back of the fleet, as well as a culture of support for newbies. In these extreme development classes just getting to the startline in such a huge personal acheivment that even handicap racing is very rewarding. Go for it! Might we see you at Newquay for the Nationals? |

Hey Funtime, Good to hear your opting for a moth but beware theres alot of junk out there and you could be putting your good money into bad. If you see a boat for sale drop a note on the class association yahoo forum and you'll be sure to get some history on it. Keith.... |

Yer i was well tempted to get a 14 but thats the trouble finding a permanent crew. I think im gonna go for the moth as I really want a challenge, and the thrill of sailing one, and eventually end up on foils.

£500 got me this magnum 6, including the meatiest combi trailer you've ever seen. Add about £60ish for fiddling to get things how I wanted, as well as cost of repainting/varnishing once a year. Probably more than a laser would cost you, but its great fun and when it goes, really flies.

I'm quite surprised someone would even think "Moth or Laser?" They are entirely different animals. Moth will mean handicap racing: don't expect meaningful class racing on that budget. They are fast and challenging to sail. Lasers are a very dated design now but provide great fleet racing with fleets at most clubs and competition at all levels. So what do you like most about sailing? Answer that and the choice should be obvious. If you buy a cheap Moth you can expect to be making frequent use of an epoxy repair kit. They are lightly built and for £500 you will be getting something quite old. That, at least, was my experience. It is not a reason for not getting one, it is just good to understand what you are getting into. |
