I'd have to say read the comparision because it pretty much sums up the choice you've got. The 49er is the out and out racing machine but remember the 800 isn't too far off it and for learning to sail a skiff coming from a Fireball, the 800 would be a great boat. You could go straight into the 49er and love it. They are two brilliant boats and you'll have fun with both of them......  (buy a 49er )

Completly different animals.

49er = proper skiff

800 = dumbed down skiff for the average sailor

I have owned a 800 and sailed 49er; I'd go 49er evrytime - it's well designed and works; the 800 is too much of a comprimise amd I'd say higher sheet loads than the 49er ...

Saying that the 800 does open up skiff "type" sailing for those who coudn't handle a 49er; the 49er definatly would not be an option form me and the wife with an all up weight of 21st but we did enjoy the 800 for a year.

Depends on what you want and who you have as a crew.

As far as choice of boats go they are really quite different. I've sailed a 49er but not an 800 but i thought that the 49er was an awesome machine. I only sailed it in relatively light wind but the speed is just awesome. The amount of effort required to sail it was quite unbelievable though, getting that last 3 inches on the main and then playing the MONSTER kite was very rewarding but i was truely knackered afterwards. I think if you are prepared to really dedicate time to sailing it with a steady crew then the 49er is the one, but otherwise then go for an 800.

Remember to look at the social scene too because u spend as much time off the water as you do on it at events! I sailed a B14 for the first time this weekend and there was lots of mast related carnage but those B14 sailors really know how to have a good time. The drinking was more hardcore than the BUSA fleet racing in weymouth last year, ROCK ON!

come on guys, the thread is 49er or 800 and ALL you ever seem to talk about is cherubs. I realise that given a choice of any 2 boats i would pick the cherub whatever but lets try and stay focussed on the task in hand. OR post into the CHERUB thread! that way we can say what we want and not get told off!

I think that the cherubs have actualy been using 980 for the last year or more, but that should reduce even more now they have the bigger rig
Never, under any circumstances, take a sleeping pill and a laxative on the same night.

What's the cherub's PY these days?

Given the RS800 is at 825, the published 1030 for the cherub is plain silly (ie it's the same as a laser 3000!!!!!).

Whatever, cherubs look lots more fun than RS800s and you don't have to buy RS bits at RS prices.  And with a PY of over 1000 you can win every race on handicap!!!!

I think it has to a 49er. a propper skiff. it lets you know when you get it
wrong and you'll learn loads more that way.

Have only sailed 49er once, but have had a 800 for about 3 months, and love it. It's pretty easier to sail, more forgivinng than a 29er and a different league from a 49er. 800 weight equalization is between 138kg and 160kg basically. A lot of 800 sailors may be club racers.. but the top of the circuit racing fleet is v.competitve.

You can't compare a 49er to an 800 they are completly different boats. The 800 is cheaper, easier to sail and with a large UK fleet. But a 49er is quicker, a much larger international fleet and there is a very high quality fleet.

The 49er requires more effort to be put in if you want to be at the top of the fleet you also need to be over 143kg combined to be competitive. The 800 has a weight equalisation system so you can be lighter or heavier to be competitive.

Depends on what your looking for but I know that next year I want to be in a 49er if I find a large enough crew who wants to do a campaign! Theres not mainy!
