im planning on changing boats after the (fireball) worlds and want something different. have narrowed it down to a twin trap skiff and a one design for simplicity.
i read the boat comparison in dinghy sailin mag on the 49er and 800 an reckon it'll be one of those.
so opinions please!!

You can't compare a 49er to an 800 they are completly different boats. The 800 is cheaper, easier to sail and with a large UK fleet. But a 49er is quicker, a much larger international fleet and there is a very high quality fleet.
The 49er requires more effort to be put in if you want to be at the top of the fleet you also need to be over 143kg combined to be competitive. The 800 has a weight equalisation system so you can be lighter or heavier to be competitive.
Depends on what your looking for but I know that next year I want to be in a 49er if I find a large enough crew who wants to do a campaign! Theres not mainy!

Have only sailed 49er once, but have had a 800 for about 3 months, and love it. It's pretty easier to sail, more forgivinng than a 29er and a different league from a 49er. 800 weight equalization is between 138kg and 160kg basically. A lot of 800 sailors may be club racers.. but the top of the circuit racing fleet is v.competitve.

I think it has to a 49er. a propper skiff. it lets you know when you get it
wrong and you'll learn loads more that way.

What's the cherub's PY these days?
Given the RS800 is at 825, the published 1030 for the cherub is plain silly (ie it's the same as a laser 3000!!!!!).
Whatever, cherubs look lots more fun than RS800s and you don't have to buy RS bits at RS prices. And with a PY of over 1000 you can win every race on handicap!!!!

I think that the cherubs have actualy been using 980 for the last year or more, but that should reduce even more now they have the bigger rig

come on guys, the thread is 49er or 800 and ALL you ever seem to talk
about is cherubs. I realise that given a choice of any 2 boats i would
pick the cherub whatever but lets try and stay focussed on the task in
hand. OR post into the CHERUB thread! that way we can say what we want
and not get told off!

As far as choice of boats go they are really quite different. I've
sailed a 49er but not an 800 but i thought that the 49er was an awesome
machine. I only sailed it in relatively light wind but the speed is
just awesome. The amount of effort required to sail it was quite
unbelievable though, getting that last 3 inches on the main and then
playing the MONSTER kite was very rewarding but i was truely knackered
afterwards. I think if you are prepared to really dedicate time to
sailing it with a steady crew then the 49er is the one, but otherwise
then go for an 800.
Remember to look at the social scene too because u spend as much time
off the water as you do on it at events! I sailed a B14 for the first
time this weekend and there was lots of mast related carnage but those
B14 sailors really know how to have a good time. The drinking was more
hardcore than the BUSA fleet racing in weymouth last year, ROCK ON!

Completly different animals.
49er = proper skiff
800 = dumbed down skiff for the average sailor
I have owned a 800 and sailed 49er; I'd go 49er evrytime - it's well designed and works; the 800 is too much of a comprimise amd I'd say higher sheet loads than the 49er ...
Saying that the 800 does open up skiff "type" sailing for those who coudn't handle a 49er; the 49er definatly would not be an option form me and the wife with an all up weight of 21st but we did enjoy the 800 for a year.
Depends on what you want and who you have as a crew.

I'd have to say read the comparision because it pretty much sums up the choice you've got. The 49er is the out and out racing machine but remember the 800 isn't too far off it and for learning to sail a skiff coming from a Fireball, the 800 would be a great boat. You could go straight into the 49er and love it. They are two brilliant boats and you'll have fun with both of them...... (buy a 49er )

Just an aside - you can get sport sails for the 49er to enable you to sail with a lighter crew weight - down to about 130kg I think and this might give you a mroe gentle ( ) introduction to the boat if you wanted to go that way...

I have just sold my 49er on the basis of going back to cherubs (wont start that now!) But in the 9er you simply 'play' the power. Very tuneable rig, im 12st and my crew is 11 - we held it in a heavy breeze, foooooookin flew!!! When I got the 9er i was lookin at an 800, but decided against it as its just a step up boat into the 9er! But since sailing the 9er i have reasiled that it really is quite easy to sail! Its very stable, and you can actaully wire to wire gybe with the kite up! Im comparing it to the cherub, but its really not overly challenging to begin with. Id say get a 9er!!

130kg is a little light for the 9er but saying that my crew and I are in the 140-150kg range and we were told we were too heavy to sail an 800 competitively. The key to the 9er is she does have a lot of power in the rig but you've just got to know how to control it. If you know about how to set up your rigs, forget about the 800 and go straight for the niner. The niner is also a boat that you'll never reach a point and wished you'd bought a higher performance boat. I've also been able to sail with 19 stone all up on the boat in a bit of a breeze, and since we both knew what we were doing, we didn't have any hassle, we didn't even swim

Yeh, them 800s are really easy to sail.

Until something goes wrong.

Still go for the 49er if you can afford it (remember high maintenance and insurance)and you can get a committed crew.

Ha ha, I hate it when that happens .........
Why not phone Dave Hall for a test sail or even find a local 49er and RS800, I reckon you'll not consider anything else once you've had a shot of the 9er

Only sailed a 49er once - absolutely brilliant. The acceleration threw me off the back and yet it was quite steady once you settle down - mind you this was only in a F2.
Sailed RS more - still excellent but not quite the same blast and if its light there's no comparison. But you can sail them in F5 and still sail rather than survive - not sure you can do that in a 9er unless you're very well practised. Hence need for a reliable and b?**dy good crew - they do most of the graft!

pro wannabe, B14s? good choice!! there are a few people in the fleet looking for crews at the moment, as those that can make the worlds are pairing up for the season and those that can't are a bit lost. There are places on quick boats whether or not you can make the worlds, best suggestion is put a note on the class website http://www.b14.org - www.b14.org Also if you want a boat of your own there are some quick boats up for sale now, get them while you can!
