TheSeaFalcon, I sailed a proper new topper with centre main the other week, I'm 12.5 stone and it was about F3 and it really flew for a a topper! I club race a laser full rig, they're such awful boats, the rig bends which in my view ins't good, all that power going to waste! I normall sail cherubs, N12 and merlins. Much better boats! But toppers are brilliant fun, you can drive them into other toppers and they don't break! Wa hoo!

the centre main just gives you an all round better feeling of control of a topper, and thus much much more confidence, and no body has ever converted back to rear sheeted, you should definetly go for it

Thnx for looking after me! to answer to an earlier posting, I am completely inexperienced and quite useless on a boat, really However, the new sail is so different. With the old one, when I pulled the outhaul, the sail wasn't getting flatter, it was getting longer! This new 5.8 is very responsive. I found tacking and gybing much easier, even at my level in a top force 4. Yes, I got it wet.... Yesterday, I also got my Topper fixed: the transom plate bolts were loose and taking in an awful lot of water. I took it to Sailing Solutions. Dave and his son Adam fixed it in no time. Very nice people, very helpful - I do recommend them ! Soooo, I'm slowly getting there... New rigging, new sail, getting more confident, hiking out with great satisfaction, etc. Who knows? I might even be racing one day !!!! |

I've been married to a sailor for quite a while. About 4 years ago, soon after we joined Lancing SC, I believed your English proverb "If you can't beat them..." and I had a go. Until last year, I haven't been sailing more than 2 or 3 times a year, because of babysitting! Someone has to look after the kids !!! I've managed to convince a friend that my little angels are no bother, so I've started sailing a little more at the end of last season and this year too. So, to answer your question: "How long have you been sailing a topper??" NOT VERY LONG !! |

Definately get c/m, in all but the lightest winds it is a huge advantage, especially in waves (in comfort more than speed tho)
