Yup, spot on Rich96.   I would add that if I got on a 600 it would sink if it hadn't fallen over first!!.  They do look great fun, but seems to me you need a serious amount of time on the water to be anygood on one. ( Bet it's a laugh trying though).

As you say, "horses for courses" and they do go like stink when they are in the groove.

If the handicap system is working properly you'd expect the winnning classes to be highly varied. The Fball with proportionally long waterline length, narrow beam and small sail area is one of those boats that you'd expect to have "its days" and knock up a big win from time to time. Some folk seem to get very excited about the 'ball's handicap but I can't say they've ever been a concern for me on days when I've felt we've sailed well in conditions that were reasonably suited to our boat.

On Fireball days we can't get near them on handicap any more than we can get near 420a on 420 days, National 12s on N12 days or whatever. But sometimes its a Cherub day:-)

Jim, I should think that with the new Cherub rig and twin wires, very soon every day will be a Cherub day (for a while).  You guys are doing a great job for your class.

So much sense written in the previous posts by IanP, Pierre and rich96.  It is so easy in the high performance boats to sail very fast in the wrong direction.  It is essential to spend an apprenticeship in a slow, closely raced class or all those lessons on wind shifts, tactics and rules just never get learnt.

Reading back through this, a thought struck me. There are lots of folk in the sailing world (in the UK at least) who seem to spend their time and effort looking for a new class to sail, whether it be because they want the latest whizz-bang twin-wire screamer or for any other reason. Just wondering whether these people ever really get the best out of their sailing, themselves or their boat? Most boats take some time to get used to, and even more to really sail well. I sail a Flying Dutchman. All the things people seem to want these days are not available to me - class racing at my club, big fleets at Open meetings, blah, blah, blah. It's taken me several years to start to understand the boat, the rig and how to make it really go.

So why sail it? Because it's the only boat I really want to sail! I love it. That's surely the answer. Put your money and time into a boat you really like, whether it's the fastest, latest best thing or not. If all the sailors in UK owned boats they really love, there would be no rows of RS800's or whatever sitting in boatparks on Saturday afternoons, cos they'd be out sailing!

Stuff fashion, find a boat that does it for you, and stick with it. If that's an Ent, fine. If it's a Bosun, I'd worry a bit, but still fine. Just go sailing!!

Well said NeilP,  I 100% agree with you.

Though my choice of boat is not of the older classes I LOVE HER!      and was the reason for my choice
