.....disagreements nearly always boil down to a purists v liberal standoff, even good natured ones, regardless of the subject. Neither side is a purely rational position either but more a result of what feels right for that individual.
As a suggestion I reckon a more inclusive, open approach would be a good idea, it sort of makes sense if attracting more participants is the goal. If greater participation is not the goal (and some have said it isn't) the end result could be an endlessly decreasing number of participants as they all slowly distill down to their purest form. Maybe there's a middle path, Maybe "sailing" was closer to that middle path a few years ago, it would certainly seem so if the comparison of historic and current activity on this forum is any gauge. I'm not just talking about quantity either, I'm thinking of breadth, inclusivity........perhaps that distillation process I mentioned earlier has already taken it's toll.........If it has then fairly soon there will be one bloke left with a hardon, lustfully spouting racing dinghy sailing in it's purest form to no one. |

For once the Inland Revenue is giving us a hand here: in order to achieve CASC status ("Community Amateur Sports Club"), and the associated benefit in taxes/regulations, you need to show that your members are actively participating in the sport; thus requiring an active membership that does actually sail and not just prop up the bar and galley. How this is handled in practice might vary from club to club, but it is a useful incentive to keep the proportion of sailing vs social members up, and thus making sure the club is run with the interests of the sailors in mind.

Having social membership is fine but social membership should not have any voting rights .... Only goons would allow their club to be overrun by giving social members a vote. I'd advise you remove their vote ASAP by rallying all the full sailing members before it is too late ...

Personally I think ttc546 and Sam Spoons are bang on the money with their thoughts. Well done chaps. FWIW, it rings true to me.

Sailing clubs don't need premises or land, they need water. My holiday club has no clubhouse or formal membership just an email list and we turn up on the beach at the appointed time, pay out £5 and race. Outgoings = £0 so every penny goes to our chosen charity, the local RNLI crew. Okay it helps that most of our 'members' spend their weekends on one of two caravan sites adjacent to the beach from which we launch but we get good sailing. The racing is more fun racing than good club standard, but that encourages those who don't normally race to take part and we had, typically, 25 boats out on each regatta day. And, the local lifeboat turns out to give us safety cover (they use it as a training day). That paradigm wouldn't suit everybody but it has been going since 1961 and works well. We have other fundraisers too and presented Holyhead Lifeboat crew a cheque for £1350 at the end of last season.

Or were subjected to a business model which forced them to do things differently....not enough margin on the traditional stuff like beer and scratchings to pay the lease....

Remember that some pubs kinda forgot that tbeir customers now need something different and expect more (i.e quality food, family facities, etc) and now, for the most part, no longer exist or are struggling. Sailing clubs take note.

Even so, I think people often stumped up fairly serious money to start sailing clubs before WW2. |
