Hello, my names John Hathaway and I'm from the Isle Wight

I'm currently building a 14ft skiff called a Paperjet 14 currently the first to built in the UK!
I'm 18 and building this by myself in my spare time in between studying a-levels.

I'm in great need of support!

I'm looking to see if anyone has any broken carbon spars, so I can fix them up, approximation 20.5 ft

I have written to a lot of companies asking for some sort of sponsorship as I have no money for rigging or sails,  I've only had a handful of replies, can anyone help? any tips on getting sponsorship?

Here's the continuing blog of the build.

Thanks

John Hathaway

Hi John,

The build looks good as far, have you thought about the fittings you are going to use yet? Harken are very good, but expensive. Also what about sails, are you going to get a sail maker, or use the rig from another similar sized boat? As the sails from the other PJ14's don't look the best (to put it lightly!),

If you want any more help just ask,
Max

Hey max

Thanks for the swift reply

I have a rig list thats mainly made up of Ronstan fittings, I've been sponsored by Harken, something like 40% of the rigging, I sent them a rig list in the summer to convert but they haven't got back to me.

I agree some of the sails people have used are pretty unimpressive, some people have used 470 rigs and 470 sails but it really doesn't look right, in the plans there are designs for a hollow wooden mast with external halyards.

A few months ago the first production set of sails were released by I-sails in france, after many months of prototyping. Here is a couple of links

I've been given an Rs400 spinnaker and jib, the spinnaker is pretty much the right size (I hope) and the jib will have to be cut down as a training sail.

Thanks

John Hathaway

That seems good, the jib (I think your right), would be a good idea to cut down, as you wouldn't want too much head sail, what about trapezes, and hooks and stuff?

Thanks,
Max

Its a single trapeze, I haven't really looked at it in that much detail, I'm still just trying to get the hull finished and painted. My aim is to be able to race it in Gurnard dinghy week just before Cowes week in the summer.

Thanks

John

I think that is a good aim, it is realistic aswell! Good luck with the rest of the build, and please put pictures up when you have finished!

I'm seriously impressed - much better than getting decent A level results! I spent my A levels stripping and revarnishing a Firefly, and it wasn't for another 5 years that I started boat building.

If you put better sails on than the ones I've seen in photos in the past, and a better mast, you'll be able to control the rig more, and so up the sail area, but I'd not go too big - the hull looks easily driven, so should get planing fairly easily even with fairly small sails.
