Hello, my names John Hathaway and I'm from the Isle Wight
I'm currently building a 14ft skiff called a Paperjet 14 currently the first to built in the UK! I'm 18 and building this by myself in my spare time in between studying a-levels.
I'm in great need of support!
I'm looking to see if anyone has any broken carbon spars, so I can fix them up, approximation 20.5 ft
I have written to a lot of companies asking for some sort of sponsorship as I have no money for rigging or sails, I've only had a handful of replies, can anyone help? any tips on getting sponsorship?
Here's the continuing blog of the build. http://uk-paperjet14-iow.tumblr.com/ - http://uk-paperjet14-iow.tumblr.com/
Thanks
John Hathaway

Hi John,
The build looks good as far, have you thought about the fittings you are going to use yet? Harken are very good, but expensive. Also what about sails, are you going to get a sail maker, or use the rig from another similar sized boat? As the sails from the other PJ14's don't look the best (to put it lightly!),
If you want any more help just ask, Max

Hey max
Thanks for the swift reply
I have a rig list thats mainly made up of Ronstan fittings, I've been sponsored by Harken, something like 40% of the rigging, I sent them a rig list in the summer to convert but they haven't got back to me.
I agree some of the sails people have used are pretty unimpressive, some people have used 470 rigs and 470 sails but it really doesn't look right, in the plans there are designs for a hollow wooden mast with external halyards.
A few months ago the first production set of sails were released by I-sails in france, after many months of prototyping. Here is a couple of links http://www.enuk.i-sails.com/oursailspaperjet.htm - http://www.enuk.i-sails.com/oursailspaperjet.htm http://www.enuk.i-sails.com/storepaperjet.htm - http://www.enuk.i-sails.com/storepaperjet.htm
I've been given an Rs400 spinnaker and jib, the spinnaker is pretty much the right size (I hope) and the jib will have to be cut down as a training sail.
Thanks

That seems good, the jib (I think your right), would be a good idea to cut down, as you wouldn't want too much head sail, what about trapezes, and hooks and stuff?

Its a single trapeze, I haven't really looked at it in that much detail, I'm still just trying to get the hull finished and painted. My aim is to be able to race it in Gurnard dinghy week just before Cowes week in the summer.
Thanks

I think that is a good aim, it is realistic aswell! Good luck with the rest of the build, and please put pictures up when you have finished!

I'm seriously impressed - much better than getting decent A level results! I spent my A levels stripping and revarnishing a Firefly, and it wasn't for another 5 years that I started boat building.
If you put better sails on than the ones I've seen in photos in the past, and a better mast, you'll be able to control the rig more, and so up the sail area, but I'd not go too big - the hull looks easily driven, so should get planing fairly easily even with fairly small sails.

If you want any extra building tips then feel free to pop over to http://www.uk-cherub.org - www.uk-cherub.org as there are plenty of people who have built their own boats, including spars, foils and sails who would be happy to help. Also, I know that Andy Patterson of Bloodaxe Boats (sails at Gurnard) was having a clear out the other week so may have some bits and pieces which will help you on your way.
Good luck. The boat looks really good. Really nice project.

The person to speak to on here about sponsorship would be hughph (send him a PM). I know he asked about it some time back and now he has a couple of sponsors.
Other than that speak to any local boat builders/chandleries you might catch them on a good day.

For sponsorship, firstly start local, see if you have any contacts that could be useful, since every little helps! If you need people for a specific set of parts e.g. blocks then think of everyone you can and send them all a letter, trying not to make it too generic. We did this with loads of clothing companies with my old squad and fat face ended up giving us some stuff and some stickers as well :)

What are your goals with this? I like the look of it, but what are you aiming to do with it? If it's a matter of getting it on the water, then scrounging an RS400 rig bit by bit might get you there. I've got an old main that I'd at least lend you if it was the last bit in the jigsaw. (but I want a go on the boat in return :-) ). It's usable but won't exactly look nice on a new boat! FWIW I bought a very much better one secondhand for under £100. Alloy masts that would work can be found on ebay sometimes, or try the forums for classes like 505, scorpion and fireball. I think all those sometimes use the cumulus section that the RS400 has, dunno if the hounds etc would be in the right place. It's still going to cost in fittings, rigging and insurance. Perhaps look for some sort of partner to share the bills?
Good Luck, let us know how it goes.

Firstly I'd like to say a big thank you for all the comments! Its so good to get people responses, views and idea!
This is the first Paperjet 14 to built in the UK that I know of, hull number 21.
Firstly I'd like to let you guys know a little bit more information about what's happening. The build of the paper started in easter 2009 at my high school, I started work with a group of people and the D.T technical in free periods, he was originally a boat builder and his knowledge was vast. after a couple of months the group dispersed, people went there separate ways, collage and other education routes.
My main reason for getting involved in boat building in school was because I was crazy about boats and among other things I nor my family could ever afford a boat. As I was by myself I grew pretty attached to the boat, I spent most of my study periods and even skipped some lessons to work on it but progress was slow as I was only a novice, but my technical was a great help. Unfortunately you're not really aloud to sand epoxy in schools without correct extraction which the old building didn't really have.
At the end of summer 2011 the school systems changed and our high school gained years 6 7 and 8, to find space for the extra students the school took the decision to convert the Design technology rooms into class rooms, this meant I had nowhere to continue building. I was pretty upset about the news, which they gave me in the middle of my exam period, as a result I walked out of a couple of exams, and failed the rest :S (silly I know.) but the boat meant a lot to me.
The hunt was on to find somewhere to store or continue building! I managed to find a very small business unit that the boat just about fits in, and i've been building in there ever since.
My goal is to complete the build by the summer to race in the Cowes dinghy week in gurnard at my local club!
Hull weight 45kg All up weight 68kg 10.2 sqm main 14.0 sqm Spinnaker
Again thank you for all your comments, please continue to follow my progress and post your views. Thank you
John Hathaway

this is the boat I posted a pic of on page 1119 of the Favourite Photos thread:

The hull does look great, but I agree that rig leaves a lot to be desired. I do have various spare masts, booms etc - all alloy, plus maybe some odd sails (in fact some very odd sails) that might be of use depending on how picky you are....
If that fails try the odds and sods request section of the cvrda, all kinds of stuff can be sourced that way....

hey, I'm planning to paint the hull white, and varnish some of the bright work I've seen they way some people have painted theirs so I've got a few ideas.
The Paperjet was affordable and just what the school paid for (: I'm not going to lye I would choose a 600 or 700 but I just don't have any money unfortunately but that's life and I'm happy building (:

Well I take my hat off to you hathjohn07. I think it looks great, and you should stop lusting after other boats and get this finished. You are doing a good job and I am sure you will probably end up with lots of options for sails and rigs with the help offered. Sails can be cleaned up so don't worry about it, just get hold of what you can. Really look forward to seeing you out on the water in it.
More importantly, your commitment and effort do you great service. (Walking out on exams isn't the way ahead, but hey, you can always retake them). Do a great job on this and see it through, and, (based on your story) it'll say more about your character and values than any bits of paper can.
Good luck and keep up the good work.

I hope it was worth it, the other option was to revise for your exams, pass them and get a job. With the right compromises on their lifestyle, most people are quite capable of saving up the equivalent cash to fund say, the RS600 you mention later.
But before you commit any further to the project, you might want to check who legally owns the boat. I assume you've got a letter or other written confirmation from the school giving you ownership of the boat, because if the technician, a paid employee of the school, had much to do with the initial build and the original bill of materials was funded by the DT department, then you could find that the school would be considered the legal owner of it.
It might be worth checking out...

Yes I have ownership of the boat luckily, the school just wanted to get rid of it, the principal agreed to let me have it which was great! :D I know it was stupid with my exams but I hadn't put enough work in during the year, Luckily I am retaking this year and on target and going steady :D
Thanks for the support

Hi John
If you want that 400 main from me i can always tie it to the Phantom boom and sail over to gurnard with it. March April time as the boat is safe in a garage for now.
Good luck

John sorry if I have missed it but if you post a list of the parts you need I will have a dig round to see what I have in my garage. I know I have at least a winder fixed rudder in the garage I want shot of but I would want something for this so it may be a non starter.

well, I do have the fully battened mainsail for a topper sport 16 in good nick and lying redundant. I have some marauder centreboards which could be reshaped and I may have a spare marauder mast. I would take an offer on the sail, but the other bits are just in the way!

Sweet looking boat! And only 45 kgs for the hull as compared to 83 kgs for a Contender - awesome! With the spinnaker, it should be faster. Amazing that we don't see more of them.
Often, building a boat can be the more expensive and painful route to getting on the water (except for those few who consider a door hinge to be a perfectly acceptable substitute for a pintle and gudgeon ). Good to see the others reaching out to help with rigs. Be sure to post the details of your first flight!

Blaze main sound like a good bet.
AS for why we don't see more of them - the market for high performance one designs appears to mainly be from time poor, money rich, middle aged blokes, so buying a Musto is the preferred option, especially when until recently loans were so easy to get!

Probably cos people have seen the rig. Wooden spars, hideous turbo sail and for the most of them you have to glue together yourself. Shame really cos the hull looks really quite nice, shame about the rest. Its sort of having Heidi Klums body with Nora Batty's head on it....google nora batty kurio and you will see what I mean

Yes...I agree that the timber spars put me off the boat at first when i saw it....but with carbon or at least ali spars...the boat should look great. I'm not sure about its sailing characteristics but there is a video of it sailing on their website which gives an indication on how it performs. It looks like it will take some practice to sail unless you have some experience on trapeze/spinny boats. I've heard the 600 can be a handful, so this may be evenmoreso with the kite option unless it has a more stable hull. Personally I love the look of it and was tempted myself to start it as a project had I more time and know how.

Saw one sailing in France last year at the France Open Skiff event. Very nice looking little boat. Was behaving pretty nicely singlehanded in very light wind, but kind of stuck in the water with a second person on board. But the wind was really light though, and the crew not very experienced.
Appart from that, I like the idea of a complete kit for the boat building enthousiast who doesn't know/want to do it all from scratch! Hope to see more of these!

I'm in a spot of trouble, I have found an rs 800 mast that I am going to modify for the boat, its in south east London, (bexley heath) and I need to pick it up before sunday because the owner is going off to the 49er worlds.
Can anyone help? Does anyone have any helpful suggestions on how I can transport it?
