Hello, have been sailing a laser radial for a couple of years but am beginning to fancy something more interesting and a bit quicker. Problem is i'm 5 foot six and just over sixty kilos so am on the small side. Any suggestions?
Cheers joe

it depends what you mean by more interesting, looks better, faster, fleet racing, technical?
the byte CII looks good and looks like a shrunk laser with a huge sail but is slower, you could get a way with a streaker but if it real blows the smaller sail hasn't taken off yet/been released (to my knowledge) so you may struggle. There is a lighting 368 but is slower, still can be a good boat if sailed well. Depending how adventurous there is a musto skiff but again you could still be to light but that is fast, looks good and full of thrills and spills, a challenge to sail. It depends by what you mean by more interesting and are you still growing/ putting on weight. I am weighing 65kg and sail a radial, and a topper, these are both great for fleet racing and it might be as well sticking in your radial (if it is close racing that you want) More detail would help?

Maybe helming for somebody would be useful for you, I know you could find yourself in the perfect weight partnership for a 29er, and probably many other double handed boats. If you can give any more information it would be very useful.

A europe or a byte c2, both excellent boats for the smaller helm. They're both quite powerful, but the carbon mast on the bye allows you to depower in gusts, while the europe is infinitely tuneable. Where are you based Joe? We have c2s and europes here at Hunts that you'd be welcome to try.
Certainly think about a Farr 3.7 longer term, but until they become available or you decide to build one, have a look at what you can get now! |

Ok then I'll give a bit more info, I'm almost 18 and judging by my family pretty much stopped growing although may fill out a bit but realistically I'm not going to get much heavier. I used to sail an original byte so am not looking to go back even with the new rig, I'm also looking for hiking dinghies so the farr is out. I just want something quicker than a laser by more interesting I meant something thats a bit more of a challenge/ fun to get round a course. Not definitely giving up on the laser just want too know whats out there.

Take up Windsurfing or Kitesurf course racing..
Or wait at least another year before the finest fastest easiest to sail most expensive dinghy ever built is launched...
