Is that a record for a Y&Y thread, that's only 40 days and 40 nights old? By sailing standards, this is a very active topic. Keep it going boys!

The thing is the RYA does a fantastic job at developing all the other Junior and Youth programmes... Why should the Cats have to sort themselves out?

I sail at a club with a lot of cats ... the dinghy parents organise loads of stuff for the Mirrors & Fevas ... but I don't see the same thing happening in the cats. In fact some of the cat sailors help with the dinghy stuff ...

Fair enough that the RYA backs the Mirror & Feva classes but I am sure if the parents showed willing the RYA would follow up ...

Perhaps a bit chicken & egg ?

I quite agree very easy to get into a catch 22 position.

In the meantime, the cats have been largely ignoring Juniors and Youth.....just like boards did for many years.

The commitment of the dinghy sailors to Junior and Youth has been obvious. From big companies to teams of sailors, they often have created kids classes with no help from the RYA or any other national body.

The commitment of the cat and board sailors to Junior and Youth classes has been much harder to see. Cats have been around for almost as long as dinghy sailing has been a really popular sport, but they haven't shown much emphasis on kids.

Given that the dinghy sailors have a 50 year heritage of trying hard to cater for kids and the cats (and until recently boards) don't, isn't it reasonable for the NAs to look to the dinghies first?

We just had a win over our NA today about junior training. Why? 'Cause we had leverage because we went out and created our own junior class. Now we are calling the shots.

I think you will find from previous posts that at LOT of cat sailors support the youth activities in their clubs, but without a development programme from the youth squad upwards in cats, you will not see cats in the youth classes (I was banned from sailing my Dart 18 at a scholls nationals - no reason was ever given).

Currently, the RYA sailing roadmap to the Olympics only has a Catamaran at the TOP of the map (i.e. Olympics).

Is one factor that there are dinghy classes especially for youths (under 16s) such as cadets, oppies etc.?  Even the Topper, 420 and 29er, whilst offically open to everyone are totally dominated by youths.  There isn't really a cat equivalent - youths still have to mix it in 'adult' classes like Hobies, Hurricanes and Darts. This probably makes it harder to have 'youth' training rather than just 'training'.

Yep, yep. Sailors under 16 (Juniors) have their own pathway to the Youth classes...

IMHO catch 22 is exactly where we are now. This is compaounded by the fact that there isn't as Chew my RS says a cat equivalent isn't really there and again which manufacturer would want to develop one in the current market so yet another catch 22. There is however the Hobie Dragoon and SL16 which could and some would argue do fit the bill, but IMHO theer isn't that initial cat that fits the bill.

You could maybe argue the Hobie Twixy (or something like that) but I'm not sure that it would offer anything that Oppy's/Toppers etc don't and in terms of established class and training would offer substantially less.  Also bear in mind that the number of potential youth cat sailors is such that it would be a brave decision to go down that route.  For me the jump on point should probably be when the time comes to move on from toppers et al - when Dragoons/H16/SL16 become more a realistic proposition.  I also think that it is important to have an option that is both challenging and fun to sail.

For my sins I sailed (well swam around it a lot) a 29er earlier this year and I had a ball.  Admittedly it was in a F4/5 but I've never sailed monos before and come in at 6'3 and 90kgs and downwind it was an absolute blast ( I would also say it was easier downwind once it was going than my f18 as it kept it's nose up.)  This is is the challenge that the SL16etc face in order to attract the youngsters to sail Cats, they are already used to sailing monos and when they hop in something like a 29er they will have a ball.
