I'm currently sailing a Topper and thinking of maybe getting a bigger boat next year. I'll be 16 then, any recommendations? I was thinking maybe a 4.7, maybe a Laser>>, maybe a magno, my dad was looking at 29ers but i don't thinks thats going to happen   i'd quite like a trapeze boat. any ideas? opinions? .

Most Topper sailors at my club see to graduate to 29ers, but you must have two of you who are going to campaign it. A 4.7 is no advance on a Topper, but you might want to consider a Radial as a singlehander. If you're not going to stay within the RYA youth class/squad boats then of course the choice is limitless!

Yeah if your going to be 16 you'll be too old for a 4.7 anyway, 2 questions:

  • How much do you weigh?
  • How bigs the place you sail?

And if you want to advance from a topper how about the Laser Radial, Byte CII, europe etc etc. Also who would you sail with and how experienced are you?

What we have some serious oldies in our 4.7 fleet at Lancing then - it is seen as an adult boat at our club for the lightweights. They now sail 4.7s rather than Streakers.

Delphina sails at Lancing which is as big an area as you can get. We have Laser 2s that she can borrow and if she is very nice to me then she can borrow my RS200 tomorrow. Either class would be good.

Then we have a couple of Laser 3000s - that could be another cheap option. But is your Dad is feeling rich then the RS500 looks nice.

I would not go for the 29er just yet as they are a bit unstable especially when launching.

p.s Whatever you do keep the Topper for when it is windy.

Yeah the 420s are good boats if you want a trapeze boat and they can range from £1000 - £6000 depending on age etc etc...About the 4.7 thing i was talking about the circuit, 16 is the age where most people will move onto the radial or even younger, i think for the 4.7 the weight range is 50 - 60kgs and radial is 60 - 70 kgs or around those marks. At my club there are only 14 and 15 year olds in the 4.7s, then 15 and 16 are in radials or even standards.
