What evidence do you have for that? Seems to me that there's no evidence that the leadmines are being treated any differently to you. Look folks, you asked for the RYA to consult more, they consulted more. Seems you don't like the results... Well maybe all that proves is that they already knew all you had to say, and it didn't override the other factors. It seems that what you are asking is not for the RYA to consult with you, but for the RYA to do what your tiny minority tells them... That's not actually what consultation means. As a sailor of skiff type boats for the last thirty years I never saw the RYA doing anything much that my tiny minority wanted either, until times changed and our type of boat became rather less of a minority interest. It took an awful lot longer for skiff type boats to get in the Olympics that it did for catamarans. Life's tough when you're a tiny minority - this tends to be a feature of democratic type systems where the wishes of the majority have a habit of running roughshod over the minorities. Now I'm a Canoe sailor I note that neither the Canoe or Sailing organisations appear to be doing anything at all to promote Canoe sailing as an Olympic sport. Should I be raising a badly written misleading petition too? Edited by JimC |

Jim- none which is the point. As the RYA have not given any reason for their decision, conspiracy theories flourish! Can you point me to anything in their statement which explains their views? As for consultation, it should have come before not after its submission. It was not a consultation but an attempt to reverse a fait accompli. As for the tiny minority stuff, it is just beneath contempt.

I only checked out one article so I suppose I could have looked harder... Quotes from the rya statements made on the Yachts and Yachting website "whereas we see rapid growth in the 29er, Laser 4.7 and Feva classes, often without RYA support, very few parents and clubs have taken the option of buying into the RYA catamaran programme. " "The current Olympic Development Squad has 4 boats (8 sailors) with only one coming from an RYA youth catamaran background, one from the wider Cat classes and the other 5 coming through the RYA’s Youth and Olympic monohull classes. " |

I don't know about other classes but the catamarans have a Round Texel race and this year there were 485 boats that finished the race (from their official website) - can't seem to find how many started.

Doug, If I stop watering my plants, will they top growing ? The RYA cut thq 16 when they were winning at the highest level. The cat squad was doing very well. The only reason the RYA could not kill it earlier was because they kept winning ! Hopefully one of the squad can expand on this. |

This is typical RYASPEAK. They make two statements to infer that they are somehow related. They are not. The "rapid growth in the 29er, Laser 4.7, and RS Feva claasses" is a fallacy in itself. You need to ask yourselves "How many of these boats do you see racing at your club on a normal weekend?" In my club, we have only two 29ers, (one sailed by adults), seven Fevas (two sailed by adults), and one Laser 4.7, which IS sailed by a cadet. Where is the growth? Most of our Fevas are for sale because our cadets would rather race an RS 200 or 500. The 29ers have never got off the ground because there is no dedicated nucleus of sailors. And as for the Lasers.........well, what a joke. Unwanted and unloved. Have you ever been on holiday? Abroard, I mean. Have you ever noticed how young people will rush over to the catamarans sitting on the beach? Have you noticed how high the sail numbers are? Have you ever asked yourself why there aren't any 29ers to hire? Edited by SoggyDoggie |

It seems to me that the RYA put far more money into the cat Squad than they ever did into the 29ers until the 29ers were already successful in numbers without that level of assistance. The RYA obviously considers that the growth in top level sailors/fleet, in spite of that money, wasn't worth it. If their claim that the parents and sailors weren't joining in is correct then I'd say they were right. I'm sure that the RYA has never got into supplying skiff type boats as they did with the multis. For instance the first or second year of the 29er transitional squad something like a third of the sailors in it had had their first sail in a asymettric/trapeze boat in my Cherub, and I like to think got into 29ers because of that: its interesting that my club has produced plenty of good 29er crews but very few 420 ones. You can be sure that the Cherub was *nothing* to do with the RYA!
Yep, I used to wonder about that until I discovered that Hobie sail numbers are literally that - per sail, not per boat: new sail, new number. But the success of that class for off the beach sailing is undeniable. It seems that, just like the RYA squad, the kids are happy to sail Cats but don't want to buy them. The question for you is why do those kids not want multihulls when they get home? Edited by JimC |

follow this link:http://skandiasailforgoldregatta.co.uk/video.asp Select the Tornado Medal race; Now does this look like good TV ? At approx 8:10 Ben A says "Great to watch"; approx 8:25 Richard Simmons "cannot get spectator sport much better than this". Why are the RYA NOT supporting this ? |
