I am confused.
The 2nd link you have given (thank you for the link) shows that info is available to join the marketing, offshore racing and match racing committees. However the info above shows there to be a vacancy in the racing committee and the youth committee. This may however be due to a delay between amending pages on websites. If so does anyone know which is correct? We are interested in the racing, olympic and youth committees. Does anyone at the RYA know when any vacancies will arise? Edited by Worthy |

I don't know why you are so hung up about membership of the RYA, that fact has become irrelevant. The Spanish sailing community aren't members, but the issue affects them so the RYA should have considered them. It also affects the Germans, Dutch, French, Americans ............... |

It sounds like a good effort, but you're still relying on monohull people to spend years to get the kids to "a certain level of ability". That still means you're taking kids out of monos, doesn't it? Isn't it understandable that the mono people may be annoyed at losing kids to people who have not been devoting years to teaching them, but have come along later when many of the hard yards have already been done and the kids are about to reach Youth level? Some other programmes seem to have foundered on the fact that by the time the kids have spent most of their formative years in dinghies, they prefer dinghies to cats or boards. One of our biggest cat builders noticed that this was a problem. Get them early, and surely they're much more likely to stay in cats. |

This arguement does not wash - many of us sail classes or in clubs affiliated to the RYA. The RYA is a National body that represents all yachting issues not just the paid up members. It is a bit like a democratic government which has to act in the interests of all citizens and not just the minority of the people who bother to turn out and vote for it |

Chris, I agree with what you are saying, but you have unwittingly stumbled upon one of the biggest problems cat sailors have. You say that mono sailors may be annoyed at losing kids to cats. I am sure that this is the case. However, it shouldn't be the case! Cats are just another form of boat. There should be no difference between a kid moving into the 420, 29er or the youth cat (then there would be no feeling of losing kids). But there is. There is an "us and them" mindset that a number of people have (some cat sailors included) that needs to be removed and then the whole process will run more freely. Edited by Worthy |

I teach in a Cat club - Pentewan Sands - all youth and beginner training is carried out in monos as I beleive this is the best way to instill the 5 essentials as basic skills. Many then choose to migrate over to Cats sailing. Why get hung up about losing people to fleets etc we are all dinghy sailors if the olympics is to represent dinghy sailing it cannot ignore a branch of the sport equating to 20% of the international racing fleets. Board - Male Board - Female single hander - Male Single Hander - Female Doublehander - Male Doublehander - Female Skiff - Male Skiff - Female Keelboat - Open Multihull - Open Whats wrong with the above? |

That's my point; people who don't vote deserve the govenrnmet they get ... For what it's worth I think there should be a cat in the Olympics but it seems to me this whole thread has lost the plot a bit and the petition premis is incorrect. The RYA didn't suggest dropping the cat from the Olympics, it just didn't back it in the 8/10 slots suggested, still 2 other slots ... |
