and whose fault is that ???

perhaps they should reconsider their management system as its obviosly failing in the ROI departement (in their eyes ) rather than scrapping a potential high growth area of sailing.

You would wonder what the ROI criteria are - medal per buck , or bums on boats , I would suggest with the continual rise in numbers competeting in cat sailing at all levels something must have been going right , coupled with our top sailors results in international competition .

I reckon for the investment made the results are outstanding !

Perhaps ,if the RYA have decided that cat saling is not worth the investment , its time that cat sailors decide that the RYA is not worth the cat sailors investment too, cancel personal memberships and lobby our sailing clubs to retain a proprtion of affiliation fees in proportion to cat sailing in the club too .

Petition signed and my comments below

Not only am I disappointed to here of the US and UK's wishes to eliminate catamaran sailing from the Olympics, I am disappointed there is no female discipline or single handed for multihulls.  I also find it hard to believe we have open and male / female disciplines in monohull dinghy classes when open classes consists of 99.9 %  male competitors.  Surely we are doubling up on male dinghy events at the expense of other disciplines.  See below for list of classes.  Perhaps ISAF should move away from the past and acknowledge there is a lot more to sailing than monohulls.  I believe Dinghies, Multihulls, Yachts and Boards should be represented at an Olympic level with provisions for male and female disciplines as well as single and double handed.  The IOC has only grated sailing with limit of 400 athletes.  To double up dinghy disciplines seems a little selfish to other disciplines.

The fact remains it is far cheaper to fund a Laser/Radial campaign than a Tornado one!

It certainly does and I suspect that this has more than a little to do with the thinking behind the proposal.  The cost however should first of all raise a discussion over whether the Tornado is the right cat (please remember other makes and models of Cat are available) not as to whether there should be a Cat at all.  Strikes a little of throwing the baby out with the water to my mind.

And I would think that the results gained by the youth Cat squad would have given a pretty decent ROI?

Totally agree with you Adrian, it should open up a discussion and after that discussion period come up with a proposal for all to see and then discuss further. I maybe wrong, frequently am, but I do think that although people are saying Tornado that does mean multihull.

But if it were the Tornado, for arguments sake, wouldn't the RYA/ISAF be better approaching the class association and talking to them about how to reduce costs eg 1 design sails... BUT that is for a different thread

You may be suprised.  The cost of the boat is a VERY small percentage of an Olympic campaign.

As for boat $$$$

How may lasers will you need to by over a 4 to 8 year campaign and what are there resale values afterwards.  Now compare that to a Tornado which has an International life span of 10 yrs.

But unfortunately the RYA I would suspect is looking at the initial outlay.

3 new tornados about £70k 3 lasers £12k

ten year old boat tornado £6-9k laser £600
