An elegant plea - however the Finns allow unrestricted pumping only when there is lots of wind, not as a substitute when there is no wind.

Not that much as different a sport as you might realise, well one facet of it isn't.

It is the purest form of sail racing there is, there are a lot of similarities I've come to realise, agreed in a total pumpfest it's different, but the energy expended is no different to that which Ben Ainslie is expending nor I guess the Laser dude who's name escapes me temporarily when he's in full flight.

Everything else is the same, in some areas easier than dinghies in other areas dinghies are more difficult, but the final goal is identical, i.e. that of beating others over the water on similar equipment a good 'sailor' per se will always be better than a none sailor at either pursuit.

How about Slingsby winning the Etchels  Worlds and the Laser Worlds in consecutive weeks?

I would agree that the physical capacities and skill set required to succeed in air rowing and sailing are not the same. It would seem the air rowers are amongst the fittest sportsmen at the Olympics.

Ah, there goes GRF mistaking windsurfing for dinghy sailing again - different sport, different magazine, different website.

I'd forgotten the Elvstrom Star/505 thing - yes, it counts! Just need someone as good to do it again - puts Ainslie in perspective... be interesting to see what would happen if he spent a couple of years sailing skiffs, though?

The day someone wins the Laser Worlds and a Racing Sailboard Worlds will be the day we've found a genuine sailing legend, until that day 'they' are all minority class champions.

Elvestrom won the Star Worlds and the 505 Worlds - he helmed the 505 from the trapeze!

Does this count!

If you can win the Star worlds and the 49er worlds (maybe we are talking the helm here, as the crews have somewhat different physiques!) then you should really be called a true master. Anyone even tried?

So we are agreed then - no-one can be admitted to any sailing hall of fame before they have won the Star Worlds (1911), the Dragon Worlds (1929) and any one of the "modern" classes - Finn, 505, Snipe, Etchells...

To paraphrase a famous quote about the Good Friday agreement "the 470, a Fireball for slow learners"
