Many thanks, lots of helpful suggestions. Have to say after all that I might stick with my original idea, which was a Laser 3000 - not expensive, really enjoyed sailing it & it's got a trapeze for blowier conditions - was being tempted by the RS100 but it sounds like a lot of money for a lot of work. Convinced by the arguments about crewing tho, will try to get some in over the winter.

Go crewing - if you sail with someone good it's an accelerated learning process because you jump some learning steps plus you side step bad habits. In any top boat the crew is as importnat as the helm. You'll get a fast ride and pick up top tips. Much easier, faster and more fun than struggling on your own.

For under £500 each, buy both and give one to friend to race against/keep spares.... cheap sailing and ticks your boxes in the asymmetric department for a lightweight... FWIW, no asymmetric singlehander is that competitive on a club round the cans course. But if you're looking for a toy to go sailing and don't give a crap about the 'competitiveness' of what you've chosen, then why waste the best part of £10k on a brand new RS100 or D-1? just managed to look at the Mini transat boats - first thought is maybe you could look for a chance to sail on an SB3 or similar? maybe you already have?

Oops, sorry, can't work the forum yet....
Asterix - they didn't give me a weight for the 8.4, just for the 7.4 - but the sales team were out & the guy I spoke to didn't seem so sure of his numbers, so it may be wrong. Rupert - had thought about that, but had assumed that I'd never learn as much or as fast crewing as helming. Not true?

Maybe you should crew for a very good skiff helm for a while? You'd learn loads very quickly. And build upper body strength!
