If Olympic sailing does anything it decreases the average weight and increases the average fitness of the sailors involved. The girls in the Radial fleet for example are now 100% better than they were in 2005 which acounts for the large changes in ISAF rankings this year. (IMVHO the Isaf rankings will only really become relevant on July 18th, even last year they were not a true reflection of the best sailors, more who had done lots of events!!!)

I've mentioned it before but weight is no longer an asset in high performance boats so women could compete on an equal footing.

However having sailed a 49er and recently BBSCFaithfull's 14 I can see that strength is still a factor and so it is liklely that if boats were designed for women then lightweight men would still be the most competetive.  Shame.

Atleast us men would have an attractive woman to look a belting downwind :)

There's that as well........

Although as a singlehanded Laser sailor, I don't have a hidden agenga going on here!

Are you suggesting that i) the woman is always to crew and not helm (possibly sexist), or  ii) The boat(s) in front of you have attractive crews (your helm is possibly ugly, and you're not as fast) !

Back to the thread......

Apparently the IOC does not want new "Mixed doubles" events.

Shame on the IOC! I thought the Olympic ethos was to be all inclusive. Without wishing to sound sexist, very few women would be competetive in the open classes currently sailed. I thought that the IOC were looking to increase % women participation, surely a mixed event would help achieve this. It would certainly reflect the phenomenom at sub-elite level.

Why are ISAF conducting a trial for a new womens doublehanded boat?  is this the start of the plan to drop the seperate Mens & Womens 470 classes in favour of the 49er and new skiff?
Feeling sorry for vegans since it became the latest fad to claim you are one
